Yup, a Stroll through new woods looking for tracks. Not too shook-up. The Timber company threw me for a loop though. They cut all the pines last turkey season but left a beautiful hardwood holler. Fine by me I thought.....but they came back for them.

Re: Opening Day! [Day 2]
Day 2. Buddy invited me to his place; I think he is still intimidated to hunt on his own But Fine by me.
We arrived at his place at 6:20, walked a couple hundred yards and hooted..........gobbbbleeee! First gobble of the year! It was too perfect.
After some deliberation we decided that he was hugging the property line but still huntable. We headed into the swamp. After a short while he was 400ish yards, but I was getting the “i’m being watched feeling” as we plodded through the swamp.
I stopped and my buddy gave me the “wtf?” look. I put in my mouth call in and gave a “I’ve been aroused out of my sleep, where are guys??” cluck sequence. Immediately a hen answered 80 yards ahead.
We diverted the track to circle the hen, and it was starting to get light-light enough to start making out the turkeys in the trees. It was a tight circle on the hen and she started to putt as we were crossing the creek she was roosted over. I gave her some clucks and she stopped her protest. My gosh where have these gullible hens been all my life?
We started to ease up the creek bank to finish the semi-circle and I spotted the silhouette of a gobbler in the tree next to the hen.
There was a giant swamp pine that we used to cover us as we slipped to within 80 yards. We made a quick twirl around the tree to sit down and the gobbler was too busy pruning himself to notice.
Right as we sat down...Gobblbleblemleenenelboglbe!!!!! The one gobbler that had been gobbling turned into three gobblers. Gobblbleblemleenenelboglbe!!!!’ They were still really far and over the line. I felt like they were roosted with the hen right in front of us, just separate, but I really leaned into the calling just in case they weren’t. I pulled out two pot calls and started working on them but when I hit my mouth call again that’s when the show started.
The hen suddenly became irate and we exchanged words I didn’t even know about. The gobblers went silent, followed by the sound of a falling wing brushing on limbs, and I told my buddy to get ready. The hen in the tree pitched down on the other side of the creek and then the blue heads started showing up at 70 yards along the creek bank. One, two, three, four, and then the one in the tree pitched down to our side, five. I pleaded my case to them so they didn’t jump across to the hen right in front of them. They ran around with a worried look and then committed to the lady in red.
They got to 28 yards and then....one, two, BOOM!!!!!!!
Perfectly executed double. Classic hunt. Great day to be alive.
