22 Rifle sports a new tube

Post by Hoobilly »

Month or so ago I posted up a grouping of my grandfathers Remington 541 22 rifle. Had a 1-4.5x scope. Tommy said that wasn’t no good and after talking to Vettedude he acquired me a big honking scope.

Thanks Shooter!

Now to get a bipod attached and back to the bench and see how she shoots with big optics.

Should do the trick, a rifle is no better than the optics.

Yep, Shooter told you right! Also, I see you went with an AO, which is a must on a .22 as far as I'm concerned.

Agreed.. The AO also doubles as a pseudo rangefinder. It’ll get ya close.

Simmons signature series off the top of my head. Hoping to shoot some when it cools down here. So stinking hot it’s unbearable

I like Simmons. Be aware if it is a big game scope you may have parallax problems on close range shots. I made that mistake years ago with my Remington 581. Don't understand "parallax" but I'm sure Google does. My 581 at 25 yards (squirrel range) will put 5 shots in a dime. Good guns. Good luck.

It's an AO so that should take care of parallax issues.

Parallax is usually set to 100 yds on most scopes without AO. AO allows you to set parallax to a specific yardage.

I wouldn't waste my money on a Simmons scope IMO, tried a couple and recoil raised hell with them, maybe on a .22 rimfire they will be OK

I have had several cheap scopes on rifles fall apart.

But on this 22 it’s gonna do good

That 541 should shoot just fine with that scope. The distance betweed the crosshair and the center of the bore would be the only thing to take into consideration.

The 541's and 581's shoot just about as good as any rimfire rifle without spending a bunch of money. I have a 581 that has killed a truck load of squirrels and a few loads of groundhogs. Our 581's came with a factory 6 shot magazines. All the others I have found have been 5 shot. Bluing is worn off mine and my brothers still looks brand new. We both got 'em bout 40+ years ago.

Just love the memories those old guns hold! If they could only talk.

I have my grandads old single shot .22 pistol that he made from a rifle to carry coon huntin'. Definitely one of my MOST valued posessions!

Let us know how it shoots now.

God Bless, Louis

this here was my grandfathers favorite squirrel rifle. He killed a lot with it. Somehow I knocked the front bead off on the rifle site. So I went a put a scope on it. Hopefully I can shoot better at 100 with it now its got a big boy scope on it

does yours have metal magazines or the plastic style?
I would love to find a couple of the all metal original versions.

hoobilly,

Ours had the 6 shot plastic magazines, I have never seen a factory metal magazine for the 541-581's. You can e-mail John Reed at Jreedtn81@gmail.com He makes an exceptional quality metal magazine for the 541-581 rifles. They are $68 shipping included but they are a real piece of workmanship. Have him send you a pic or two, you'll like 'em.

God Bless, Louis

PS Bout time you shot that thing!

Thanks I will check his mags out. These el cheap plastic mags wear out fast. Nothing ticks me off faster than wanting to shoot something in the back yard and you grab the magazine to load and it spews out all the ammo. I try and not overload the mags

Nice looking rig.

I was in the market for a good squirrel rifle about 25 years ago and came down to a 541-T or a 10-22. I decided to go with the 10-22 because of all the accessories available. It has been a good gun, but I soon regretted not going with the Remington. Enjoy!

Considering all the posts online about the Remington 581 series that are super accurate, I can see why they are selling for a lot.

This one needs a trigger job. It’s got creeeeep. Have read one referral on a 15 minute clean up debur and cut the spring down a hair for a creep free 2-3lb pull. I need it. High blood pressure and a messed up right eye doesn’t make killer groups at 100. 50 it’s a half inch or better. Better means I shot left handed 😆

There was a season many years ago when a few of us had a squirrel contest. Ohio limit was four. We would each take four shells. A 581 and a 580 (tube feed) often tied. Excellent rifles. Mine is at least forty if not fifty years old.

Good scope, but what if you compare it with Top 4, it seems to me that it would be much better
