wanted some feedback on glass/crystal calls

Post by Spurtacis »

so I have narrowed it down to 3 calls the woodhaven "cherry classic crystal" and David Halloran "crystal mistress" or the Halloran "twisted sister" but wanted to know if I may have had tunnel vision and missed a call that's in or around this price range that I need to look at first any feedback would be awesome thanks

If I had to pick out of those 3 it would be the twisted sister.

Loftis Crystal Screamer is my favorite Crystal. Of the 3 you listed I'd go with the twisted sister.

My favorite 2 crystal calls, a Blackstone, and a Halloran crystal mistress. Tha being said, I just picked up a David Prouty crystal that sounds great.

Not to sound my own horn but check out my Gooserbat High Standard crystal.

Of those three I'd opt for the twisted sister.

I like the metal mouth better than the sister. if you buy a call from Halloran, its a quality call, no matter which one you pick.

Well with that being said I think Lyle Gilbert at houndstooth is way over looked on his calls..another good one that's well known is Jimmy Schaffer

Man, this is like choosing a favorite between your children. Halloran makes great calls, a crystal screamer from David Loftis is a must, that woodhaven has killed many a bird.

At some point, it comes down to what sounds good to your ear and what you will be confident with. Many will fit the bill.

To me, I have an old Southland Calls Yellowheart Crystal. It is flat out nasty. I have confidence with it because I've killed a lot of birds with it. In addition, I have had many really good turkey hunterS look at me after a hunt and sat it's the best they've ever heard.

My best advice is to pick one and become confident with it. There's nothing worse than being in the woods with a call that you aren't confident with.

A girl in a hot outfit with no confidence will lose out to a girl in sweats that struts her stuff with confidence every time.

IMO the "new" Woodhaven crystals are not comparable to the "old Woodhaven cherry crystal calls which were one of the best production pots ever made.

well after looking here and there I finally decided on a call and it wasn't any of the 3 that I had first looked at but I read something on here that made a lot of sense and I never thought of it but if a call doesn't sound good to you doesn't matter who's name is on the thing your not going to be confident to play it and I found that to my ear Derick Reis has one of the best calls out there again not trying to say that David or Woodhaven makes a bad call because that just plan stupid to say but to me and my ear I like what Derick's call produces and if you guys haven't heard of him check out his website www.dreiscustomcalls.com he is an awesome guy and super fast with getting back with you he also donates his time and calls to military organizations to help raise money to help wounded soldiers so again if you don't know or haven't heard any of his calls I would check him out ill post some pics of the call that I got when it comes in thanks again to all the guys on here that replied with feedback thanks again

I reach for the mistress first....but the metal mouth is climbing the ladder. Can't comment on the others, as I don't have them.

It's wormy maple pot glass over aluminum and old glory was something he added and I think the flag was an awesome touch also the maple was gifted to him by a very respected box call maker from New York, Scott Witter. But over all a awesome sound and a awesome looking pot call

True. Pick one now, put the others on your wish list. You can drive yourself crazy trying to pick among a multitude of calls. Your final three are all nice calls. Best sounding call I've ever heard was a Woodhaven Crystal. But I've heard others of the same call that weren't quiet as good, but they would certainly kill turkeys.

The vision crystal from Woodhaven is hard to beat with the flared birch striker. I have an older one that will flat tote the mail.

Alot of good ones out there, you can have two calls of equal quality, but one may play easier to your style.

I walk the convention with some very good callers. Sometimes they can spit feathers with a call and then I'll play it meh.

Then go to next booth opposite. I run light striker pressure others more.

A bunch of good advise here , and so many good calls talked about . I would like to add that practice and I believe just as important as the call is the right striker.
I own strikers that sound horrible on the best callers and I have them that transforms ok pots into live birds ,so try several and best of luck .
