fall mountain gobbler

My brother had been unable to find a flock of mountain toms the last three times out, but finally found some today. Called them over with a Quaker Boy World Champ and took one with his old 2-3/4" Wingmaster and 2 oz of TSS 8s.

Good job of sticking with the hunt Hal and congrats to your brother and your "expert" calling, to get a very nice tom
I would've thought his beard would have been a bit longer for a 2 yr old?? ;)
ever wonder where the white goes when the snow melts??

Got out myself this morning in 17 degree weather - after a VA bird. And I found one that wanted company. Image

That's awesome! Congrats to you and your brother. I spotted a flock today while pheasant hunting. If there had been a tom in the group, I'd have changed over to turkey hunting

Congrats to you and your brother ! I was walking out of my deer spot a few days ago and walked up on a group of 40 or 50 birds in the 2 track path. There were 5 toms strutting and chasing each other around. By the time I got out my camera they had started to move off into woods. I messed with them a bit and could have shot a nice tom but no fall season here ! :banghead:

Not quite so fast...

I still had a western fall tag left and made the flight west early yesterday morning and drove down to the pre planned hunting spot with enough time left over to squeeze in a 1-1/2 hour late afternoon hunt.

We had hens answer our calls and made a move on them and set up. They were headed the in the other direction but turned around and came and started working to us. At the same time another big group came up from a different direction and I counted 102 turkeys that came within 25 yds of us. I only lost my focus and stopped counting when a couple Toms showed up...

After the smoke cleared and turkeys settled down, we watched them fly up to roost - it was like a big flock of very large blackbirds in the cottonwood trees along the creek bottom. I figure there was maybe 130 turkeys in that flock altogether based on what I counted and what else was there.

Quite a sight.

Thanks. I have no tags left anywhere, and it's been a uniquely successful fall.

Turkey season is still open in a few places, as evidenced by this nice UT tom from yesterday.
