Day 7 of the 2019 Ohio Deer Season

Post by HunterGKS »

It was 30, windy, & partially overcast at 07:08 this morning. The wind chill was into the low-to-mid 20s
& blowing from the SW, again, & right into my face. I hooked up a full tank to the Heater Buddy &
cranked it up to high. My lower extremities were cold but not chillingly so. From mid-chest up was a
whole nuther story.

All week, there were a lot of tweeties around & quite a few squirrels. Not so this morning. Not a single
bird or squirrel. The wind kept picking up & I decided to call it a season at 09:50. It was just too dang cold.

I did notice something odd this season besides the dearth of deer. In the past, there have always been
several flights of geese leaving the quarry, which is due west of me, & flying SE to feed. They always
return in mid-afternoon to overnight at the quarry. This year, not 1 group flew over. Monday, I heard a
few in the swamp on the west end of the woods but that was it. I usually see a lot of flocks out in the
combined corn & bean fields but have only seen a couple of flocks this year. I wonder if it has anything
to do with the below average planting this year?

There was very little deer activity on my trail cam over the last 10 days & it was all at night & only does.
I did find that the time was way off & that I will have to do some adjusting when putting it out for turkey
season. It should have picked up a lot of squirrels but nada. It did get a good pick of this big, ugly critter.
Looks like a relative of Big Foot.

Today was the last day unless I decide to hunt the 2nd season. If it's as
cold & windy as today, there ANFW!! It's still blowing & has been all day.

The problem is that no one is moving in & out of the woods keeping
the deer moving. I've seen 3 hunters in the woods adjacent to where I
sit & 2 in a truck. Used to be, you'd see at least 10-12 on a daily
basis in the woods & others in vehicles.

Deer move more at early evening and night, especially when human(hunter) traffic picks up and they get more and more nocturnal :banghead:
ever wonder where the white goes when the snow melts??

One of the more comprehensive research projects on the subject was conducted by Dr. Mickey Hellickson,
former chief wildlife biologist at the King Ranch in South Texas. Hellickson used GPS-based transmitters
and activity monitors to track the movements of collared deer from 6 a.m. - 7 p.m., from October
through January over a two-year period, collecting more than 420,000 observations from 43 collared bucks.
Results showed daily buck movements peaking at 7 - 9 a.m., 6 - 7 p.m. (which is after dark & illegal)
with a slight peak at midnight. Lowest hourly movements occurred from 5 - 6 a.m., 3 - 4 p.m. and 10 - 11 p.m.
More importantly, this pattern was relatively consistent throughout the four-month range, regardless of moon phase,
though overall movement increased during peak rut times.
