Days 6 & 7 of the 2018 Ohio Deer Season

Post by HunterGKS »

Day 6

It was 36 with a light breeze & some fog in the field I look into. It was supposed
to be warming up but it didn’t & the breeze mad it chilly enough that I started the
Mr. Heater Portable Buddy at 09:20. It started to rain at 10:40 & the only critters
I have seen were the grey red squirrel, a couple of fox squirrels, & 2 Black Caps.

I decided that, if & when the rain slacked off or stopped, I was heading in. It had
pretty much stopped at 12:45 & I high-tailed it to the truck. I got everything
loaded just in time as the rain started up again. It was still only 37 so, once again,
the weather people fumbled.

It’s supposed to be pretty nice tomorrow so I’ll hit it again.

Day 7

It was 52 with a clear sky, no stars but a crescent moon, & a light breeze at 07:00
this morning. At 07:27, I saw a large doe walking across the field from the east at
about 50 yards. At the shot, she did the usual jump kick & started trotting south
away from me. She was near the SE corner of the woods when she turned & took
off running into the woods. I thought to myself: “Self, I thought, OH CRAP!!!!
(or something of that nature) Another tracking job in the woods!!!!” About that
time, I saw her flop down right at the edge of the field in the grass. THANK GOODNESS.
I filled out the tag, got my drag rope & road the 4-wheeler over to drag her to my
cleaning trees next to the blind. As I got to her, I did my best Gomer Pyle impersonation:
“GOOLLLLY!!” It was a 7 point buck!! I was back at the truck & loaded by 08:30 & the
temp was still 52. 27 minutes from start to finish is the fastest deer hunt I have ever had.

When I went to Gobbler’s Roost for fall turkey, I told Ron I didn’t care if I killed a bird or not.
I was just happy to be there spending time with good friends. If you know me, you know
this just isn’t my usual frame of mind or approach to turkey hunting. I wasn’t sure I’d
even deer hunt this year as I just couldn’t get motivated. I didn’t buy my tags until the
Tuesday before Thanksgiving but I’m glad I pushed my self into going & I don’t feel bad
about missing 3 days.

The buck weighed in at 142 field dressed which would make him about 190 live weight.
You can see the size difference in the last pic.

Next comes the part I’m not so crazy about, the butchering. I’ll probably do the doe
tomorrow or Tuesday afternoon & the buck probably Thursday. It’s supposed to be in
the high 30s tonight & the low 30s the rest of the week so I can let them age for a
few days,

COME ON SPRING TURKEY!!!!
The 4th pic is looking back to my stand from where the buck dropped.

Thx. And, to address your question, it's 1 of the great mysteries of life that may never be answered. (There are
other things I could say, but they're all wrong, SO WRONG!! ROTFLMAO!!)

Actually, I couldn't see the rack so it was a pleasant surprise.

Thx, Ronnie. I could get 1 more tag & we still have a 2nd season the 15th & 16th but I'm done.
