Florida Whitetail - yesterday

Don't normally hunt whitetail in Florida preferring to concentrate mostly on spring turkey. We run several cameras almost year round and shortly after Hurricane Irma (Sept 10th) we began getting pictures of two super bucks and a few other nice ones in our main turkey woods. The deer season in our section of FL runs through Jan 21st. On my third solo hunt this deer tried to slip by at 7:30am in a light fog. I had given thought to only shooting one of the two "big boys" if the opportunity arose but when this buck presented a 30 yard shot that thought went by the wayside. My Savage 110, .243, with 100 gr WW took him cleanly. Before he showed several hens were yelping in various areas. No gobbles. Always hear that FL deer are small but this guy was every bit as big as most OH and KY deer I have taken. Hunting solo it was as much as I want to drag and lift into a truck bed. I'll work on adding pics but have almost given up on this site as far as posting pics.

There are different deer and different quality of habitat in different parts of FL.

I have noticed that animals are bigger the further north you go.

Yes they are and there is a biological term for that. Maybe someone will know it. It has to do with only bigger deer can survive northern winters so these are the genes that are passed on.

Going to attempt to add a picture. This is what we believe is the 2017-2018 version of this deer that survived the 2016-2017 season. Does not look like an old deer to me. Much discussion about the picture on some FL forums. I don't think this deer is over 2 1/2 years old. Others disagree.

Thanks - except I double posted the 2016-2017 pic. This deer survived and we think he may now be the big boy in the first set of pics on this thread with his 2017-18 antlers. I'm not going to try for any more deer this season so I'm hoping he survives one more week of FL hunting. Other guys do hunt this ranch but not frequently. We are the only ones running cameras and we aren't mentioning this particular deer ;)
