A few new calls

Post by SCtrkyhntr »

I have picked up a few new pots and boxes lately and I'm pretty happy with them. I enjoy collecting a few new calls now and then but have had a pretty set group of calls I carry hunting for quite some time. A few of these may actually make it into the hunting rotation.

The short box on top is a yellow heart call made by Steve Mann. I do not buy very many short boxes. I normally use scratch boxes like most folks use a short box but this one is a keeper. Probably the best short box I own. The long box is also from Steve Mann.

The pot call on top is from Dustin Jones at Blackstone Custom Calls. This is the first call I ever played of his and it is a very good call at a very cheap price for such a good sounding custom call.

The pot call on the right is from Sadler McGraw.

The glass on the left and slate on the bottom are from Ted "Pete" Peters. Back when I first got serious about turkey hunting, one of my buddies had a Pete Peters Shady Lady friction call and that was the first high quality pot call that I ever played. It really got me interested in custom calls. Since then I have accumulated more pot calls than I could ever need. Occasionally I will still troll through ebay looking for a Shady Lady in decent shape. While looking for one a few weeks ago I ran across a listing by Ted "Pete" Peters for some final edition calls. Turns out Ted had some unfinished calls still in his shop from 2001 when his health got bad and he stopped building calls. I guess his health is a little better now and his buddy convinced him to finish several calls he had remaining and he now has them for sale as his final edition calls. I picked up a final edition Sweet Lips slate call and Sassy Glass. I will have to say the Sassy Glass is probably the best friction call I have added to my collection in several years.

Good looking callers. Mr. Mann makes some good boxes. I personally do not have one but have played a couple and they are killers. I am interested in getting a Sadler McGraw pot myself. Jason (WV Ridge Reaper) sent me a sound file of his and it is the sound I look for. I have came to found that in pot calls the glass and crystal surfaces are my favorites. Good looking set of calls you have there!

Thanks for the comments guys. I don't get to play any type call as much as I would like to anymore but hopefully I will still be able to trick a few to come to the call this spring. I am definitely going to give a few of the calls above a field test.
