Trumpets from Nashville 2019
Bought two trumpets from the big show..
one of which is a Ralph Permar (Oldgeezer on the forums) and a Matt McLain. Both are turkey
The Permar I have wanted one for many years.. I guess im a procrastinator but better late than never.
here Ralph is talking with Steve Luma (who makes excellent running and stunningly beautiful works of art)
After buying the Permar and just around the corner was Matt Mclains booth. Went to lunch and then came back to Having heard of his calls, and not running one I just had to try a couple out. I really liked the one with the beveled tip. While I was there Steve Luma came to Matts booth set down and popped out a few of his trumpets. Steve impressed me with his craft. I left thinking I would be able to go home with just one trumpet, but I came back a hour later and bought it.. When I walked and bought the McLain trumpet Steve told me I knew you were gonna come back and buy that. I asked him if the one he showed me earlier was still for sale and he laughed and said he sold it already.

Those are both nice trumpets. I hunt with a McClain at least a couple times a year.

Nice pair of killers. Permar is a master craftsman for sure.

Matt makes a killer trumpet. I need to get another from him. At first I was not happy cause I could not play it well, but just a tiny adjustment on the lip stop and man she came alive! Great trumpets!

That’s one thing I noticed right away. Just small movement on the lipstop changes everything.

So whats the difference with the trumpets is it just a look thing. I have 2 trumpets and have played a couple they all seem to be turkey so why some over others is it just the look is that why you pay more for certain ones ?

Re: Trumpets from Nashville 2019
I ask because I felt the same about box calls. I have a couple fancy ones but they don't play any better than the cheap Quaker Boy I bought when I first started. So is it just a look thing?
Re: Trumpets from Nashville 2019
Some are easier to play that others and some have been tones than others.timbrhuntr wrote: ↑February 21st, 2019, 1:41 pm So whats the difference with the trumpets is it just a look thing. Re: Trumpets from Nashville 2019
There is a world of difference in different trumpets. Some take a lot of air to run, which makes them loud, while others take less air and can be played quieter. Also, internal dimensions and length vary from maker to maker which effects tone and pitch. And some just sound more "turkey" than others.

Interesting info makes sense. That would make it tough to sort through them to see what you like.

Beautiful trumpets! Congratulations!

Ralph makes a helluva good trumpet. I called up 18 old gobblers last season with one of his hex trumpets in Blackwood and ivory.

Those are great looking trumpets! How does the angled mouth piece compare to a straight one?
