My current box call situation....

Post by Waddle Whacker »

Image
I'm not much of a box call guy, and maybe that's because I don't own a good one. I'm looking to change that over the summer. I think I've got a pretty good list of names complied. Let me know what y'all think. I'd like to keep it under the $150 mark. I'm considering the following:
-Steve Mann
-Irving Whitt
-Al Shoemaker
-Darrin Dawkins
-Ed Terefencko
-Bob Harwell

I'm in the same boat. I heard a David Halloran checkered box the other day though and man that thing was sweet. I don't know too much about the other names on your list but I don't know too awful much about custom calls in general.

I carry a Ron Clough box that has brought a lot of birds to the gun. Check out his site which is listed in the Callmakers string.

You ain't missin' nothin'. I had some good ones that I killed turkeys with, but I sold them all. One of the better moves I ever made. This is the only one I wish I'd kept: http://www.enticerturkeycalls.com/shop/ ... ratch-box/

Get up with Al Shoemaker at SS Customs. His boxes are just as good as those you listed and you can get a premium box for much less. Another to look at is Albert Paul. Good luck.

Well for 12.95 you can get one back pretty easy! Order 2 and send me one :D It sounds good!
Part of me says, you don't need it. It's not gonna sound any better than any other box you've ever played. I don't know. A box call tends to sound like a box call to me. But I think I'd still like a nice one.

I have a few box calls but I don't carry any of them when I hunt. I just don't like hunting with a box call. I can tell when someone is hunting with one on a neighboring property because of the distinct sound they make...

I musta forgotten Mr. Paul from my list, but he was on it. I was leaning Shoemaker from the get go, based on everything I've read, plus the cost.

I love my SS kwila/poplar box. My bro has been slaying them with his Maple/butternut SS. I agree that you can tell when someone is using one, but a lot of times they seem to pull a gobble when nothing else will. I like to use them to locate mostly, but sometimes if the bird is eating it up I use them start to finish.

http://www.longbeardcalls.com/calls.htm can build you a long box that sounds exactly like this hen http://vid23.photobucket.com/albums/b37 ... I_0141.mp4 Unfortunately that hen couldn't call a gobbler to save her life, because she sounds like a box call.

:LMAO: Part of me feels the same way about a box, but the other part wants a nice one. Won't know till I try. If you start seeing a bunch of Morgan calls for sale on eBay, you can assume the box worked  Yeah.....that ain't gon happen

Yeah, I have. I just couldn't find much info on him. Does he still make calls? Anybody have his contact info?

I bought an Albert Paul call http://www.paulscalls.com/ - and NEVER go to the woods without it.

Have to keep an eye on my hunting buddies, or it will end up in their vest.

My only advice is go somewhere where you can run it - if it doesn't feel / sound right to YOUR ears, you won't be happy.

I have several from that list. Darren Dawkins is the best one I have hands down. I also have an Allen Jenkins one-sider that sounds better than the lynch one-siders to me.

Jeepers! That's rough!

Under $150, probably S&S Calls. Terefencko? Not sure if he's under that price range or not.

If I was you I would buy the cheapest one I could find, cause it looks like you might be a little rough on 'em.
