About 8 years ago I built a set of pits using old lumber I found in my barn. It held up fairly well until 2 years ago when the wood started to rot. I decided the pits needed to be rebuilt so I picked up some pressure treated 2x6s, 2x2s, & the hardware I needed. I built both of the boxes & the frames for the covers & got 1 of the boxes set over 2 afternoons. I got 1 of the covers built on another afternoon.
This is what 1 of the old pits looked like. When I built them, I laid the plastic sand bags on the bottom to stop weed growth. It didn’t work as weed & grass seeds landed on the sand & germinated. About 2 weeks before this pic was taken I sprayed with round up &, after several days, cleaned up all the dead growth. As can be seen, the weeds/grass is already starting to come back. I plan to get some long lasting herbicide to spray in the pits after our family get together on the 20th. Between that & the covers, I'm hoping to solve the wed problem.
Hopefully the pressure treated wood will last for a lot longer then the original old wood I used. It's a lot of work rebuilding them.

The old pit ready for the new box to be installed.
One of the new boxes.
The new box installed with a double thickness plastic weed barrier.
This is 1 of the new boxes with the old sand but before any new sand has been added.
The basic frame of a cover.
The top of a cover. The metal is left over from when I had my new building put up. I didn’t have enough of 1 color for either cover so 1 is green & white, the other red & green. I will be using 2 lag bolts on each end of both covers to hold them down.
The under side of the cover showing the supporting 2x2s.
The finished pit with new sand.
The cover attached to the top of the pit with 4 lag bolts, 2 on each end. With all the strong winds we have around here, I wanted to be sure the covers didn’t blow away.

Re: Rebuilt Horseshoe Pits
Thx Kevin. When I built the original pits, I did a haffast job using old, scrape wood & it didn't last. This time, with all the time & effort involved, I'd do a better job with better lumber so, hopefully, it will last a lot longer.CamoMan4025 wrote:Well George, when you do something, you really do it up right! Re: Rebuilt Horseshoe Pits
Great job well done George
Let me guess, the 2nd lid is a red & blue color
The pitches on the lids for rain water run off, is split in the middle, so the rainwater runs each way & is split equally for erosion control, w/good weed control inside, and excellent grass growth around each pit
