Sweeney's BBQ Sauce.

Post by Johndoe »

My Grandfather, "Poppy", owned or ran a restaurant in Baltimore for many years. He made a BBQ sauce that I loved as a kid. It's like a Carolina Grillin sauce I'm told. We would mostly do as George did with the turkey or squirrel meat. Boil meat and pull from bones then place in sauce to cook a bit. Place on bun with coleslaw and eat.
Well after years of not havin the recipe I was able to find a copy. I took a day last week and made it. I think it turned out real good. Tastes about right. Tried some ribs and chicken yesterday and was real good.
Well, as no one in my family cooks for a living, I have no reason not to share with others.
So, here it is.

I hope someone will try it and like it as much as I do.

It seems like a lot of onion but when it's done it's right. I made some years ago but I just wasn't old enough to do it right. With age come patience and wisdom to an extent. Lol

JD, you ramped up the heat on that stuff yet, for a good wing sauce?

How do you keep it for long term storage? Does it need to be canned or can you just pour it in a jar and put a lid on it?

I wasn't sure it was for me until I ready way down the list, and saw the cup of cider vinegar, then I knew it looked like some good stuff.

Home made BBQ sauce is the only way to go and that one looks like a good one.

JD, That looks similar to a sauce I made when I lived in FL which also combined maters & vinegar. Unfortunately, I can't find the recipe & have about torn up my paper files & books. I created it long before PCs so it was all on paper. I'm beginning to think the the girl I used to live with took it as a part of the "GET THE F____ OUTTA MY HOUSE" settlement.

I may give it a try this summer. I loves a good sauce!!

Have not heated it up any yet. Just made a batch and still have 2 qts. Will heat up next time. I don't really worry about storage as I give some away each batch I make. I seal them in mason jars. It was really good on wings but does need some more heat for them. George, take some of your squirrel or other meat boiled off the bone. Put into small amount of the sauce and cook. Put on bun as a BBQ samich.
