Got my SML converted Brux barel and assorted goodies from Jeff Hankins last week.

Factory pin fits VERY snug and locks up great.

Haven’t decided on a scope just yet but will have her complete shortly for a test run.

If that shoots half as good as it looks.. man that’s sexy

Spurhntr,

What load and bullet are you planning? What are you thinking on a scope? Everyone says these guns/loads are hell on scopes. Current gun has a Leupold VX3 and I am debating wether to try it or go to something considered more sturdy. I got my barrel from Jeff last week and like you am still putting all the pieces together.

Hey 2gbl,
Doubt you'll find a more shockproof scope than a Leupold, that's what I plan on putting on this gun.
I have been shooting a Leupold on my Savage SML since 2014 with 0 issues.
I'll honest, I'm not settled on a bullet or powder just yet.
Thinking though that I'll start with 55 grains of IMR 4198, 250 grain Hornady FTX or 275 grain Parker, and go up one grain at a time and when I get to 65 grains or my chrony hits 2500 fps I'll stop.
Im not a SML fan for ultra long range use, I simply hate BP and it's substitutes after using it for 35+ years.

I have a hankins conversion rem 700. With a heavy load of varget I get 3200 fps with a 325 gr bullet and under 3/4 " groups at 100 yds. Have shot under 3" groups at 600 with pittman bullets. Hankins builds very good and accurate guns. He had some cva conversions in stock ready to go several months ago. I think between $500 and $ 600 dollars.

Why the 300's? I got everything ready to go this weekend. Just need the weather to break so I can shoot.

Broke the Hankins sml out for the first time. 45 cal Brux barrel 1in20 twist. Smooth sized some 250 ssts and started them over 50 grains of 4198 and worked up from there to 55 grains. Three shot group at 100 went less than 1/2 inch.
Will post more results when I can stretch the range out and the weather is more cooperative . The 250’s have a nice rap from the bench. Don’t think I want to shoot anything heavier.

I've been shooting my Encore BP for years & am looking at extending my long range by going smokeless. Do you have Jeff's contact info? I could use Arrowhead but would like to explode my options. Thx.

Shot this Encore SML at 100 yesterday. 73 degrees with a hint of a breeze. Had used some Winchester primers and it was hit or miss on those setting the H4198 off. Grabbed some 209 Federals that I pulled from the Federal 20ga hulls to compare them new ones being sold by ballistics and they are noticeably hotter and went bang everytime.

Couldn’t get the bench in the minivan so I shot off the hood with the bags. First 2 shots top right and then I adjusted down from there. The Leupold I have on this is a old one with no positive clicks. So it’s not the best for fine tuning. Looking at getting a new Burris soon for it.

I will say the federal primer and the knurling of the Hornady bullets so they grab the wad definitely increased felt recoil. Probably more so because of the primer.

Bellm kit is good stuff! Had one put on my Encrore. Went from 6lbs to around 2!

Have done it to my other Encore. The one with the turkey 20ga barrel on it. 2 lbs for a turkey barrel is almost too lite in my eyes as it could go off accidentally with erratic breathing and the barrel doing figure 8’s :LMAO:

2# is light. It cost me a coyote last winter! Once you get used to it, it’s golden!

I feel a 2.5-3lb trigger on a shotgun muzzleloader or rifle is all that I want for hunting. Most of the time I have people with me like kids and when it’s light I tend to be on edge

Agree, TOTALLY! If your not the only dedicated shooter, it can be downright dangerous. I’ve shot guns all my life, and never new what a “good” trigger felt like! I shot them all out of the box, good, bad or ugly. I am a little more discerning now and can’t tolerate a 6 or 8 lb. trigger that’s full of creep. I want to know when the gun is going to go off. It makes you a much better shot.
Shotguns are a little different story.
