Should I dip this gun?

Post by Hunt4spurs87 »

Would I be a fool to dip this gun in bottomlands it’s probably the best looking gold hunter I’ve ever seen as far as wood goes? Probably had 40 rounds through it.ImageImageImage

I couldn’t dip that wood!

Maybe the metal, but I’d leave the wood showing!

Being in my right mind, I get stuck buying LH Medallion grade Brownings. A gel paint remover and scraper will take that coating they put on there off. Then you can rub in boiled linseed oil. It'll look good and not shine.

Or you can just give it a liberal coat of paste wax. It'll rub off after awhile, but it cuts the shine. I have one A-Bolt I shoot deer with that I never have got around to taking the finish off the stock. A tin of Tree wax has lasted for years and years.

Dip it if you want it dipped. It's a Browning gold, so it already lost about 50% of it's value when you bought it.
You could try to find a different stock and forend to dip and keep the good wood in case you ever wanted to go back.

I bet the linseed oil would look good. Never have liked the shiny shellac looking stuff on a gun.

You could take 0000 steel wool to the stock with a little oil and take the shine off without ruining the finish and still see the grain of the wood. Sorta gives the finish a matte look. IF you dip it put a coating over the dip and it will last alot longer.

Cerakote all the metal and either strip the finish off of the wood and redo w/an oil or matt finish or lightly sand/buff w/ fine steel wool/scotchbrite. IMO, God will not like you dipping such beautiful wood!

All depends on what you are going to hunt with it. I like a pretty gun when I hunt quail and pheasants.

Dipping, painting, etc., are more often to please the hunter rather than to avoid displeasing a bird. Gun "skins" could do the work without harming the wood. https://www.gunskins.com/products/rifle-skin
Years ago someone made stock and forend coverings that had a zipper for easy removal and covering. A buddy has them on his Mag 10 Deluxe. Gil
