Remington® Model 870 SPS Super Mag Turkey vs Turkey/Predator

Post by jims »

I noticed Remington has 2 similar 870 Super Mags. One is the turkey and the other turkey/predator. The turkey has a 23" barrel and the other has only a 20" barrel. Does anyone have any experience with either of these. I would think the 23" may hold a little tighter group at 40+ yards? It looks like the turkey/predator also has a little different rubber grip on the forearm and stalk....which I would like. I would buy a different dot scope than comes with the turkey/predator. Just curious what you guys think? I hunt fairly open country so having a little more range would be good but not sure if there is much difference between the 2 shotguns?

Longer barrel will give u the longer range pattern advantage as u already said, especially if you use an extended choke.

Does anyone have experience with either of these shotguns and have any idea on how they actually pattern? I've done some searches and haven't found a whole lot. I watched a youtube video with a guy that shot the 20" barrel at 40 yards with the standard choke that comes with it and it had a pretty impressive pattern. Anyone else?

I have owned a short barrel 870. 21” and with the IndianCreek and Hevi13 #6’s and magblends it patterned to 50. I never patterned past that far but no doubt it would kill further.

I would still be hunting with it but it was stolen.

Shurshot stocks and it was very well balanced.
The supermags I owned only for a short time as they felt unbalanced in my hands for hunting. Now with tss I would say that lil 870 mag would be even better at longer ranges if needed.

For those that have experience with the shorter 870's....have you done pattern tests at 40+ yards with the standard chock that comes with them vs other chokes...or longer barreled 870's? It would be interesting to know if there actually was much difference. Thanks to those that have offered advice!

I haven’t tested factory chokes in mine. But I did with IndianCreek’s and that Gun shot as good as any 24-26” barrel

I have an old school Remington 870 with no choke but long barrel. It will be interesting to compare patterns once I get a new one with shorter barrel and a choke.

I have a 23" that shoots some great 40yrd patterns with tss 8's. It patterns better than the SBE II's I had. One was a 24" and the other was a 26". I don't think you would see much a difference between the 20 and 23" barrels but my preference would be the 23" barrel because the 3" won't make that big a difference carrying it.

I think it's more the load and choke combo that would make the difference in how they would pattern.

Not entirely true, I have 4, 870 guns and the one with the shortest barrel 20" will out shoot them all hands down, same choke same ammo change/swap chokes makes no difference that short little 870 flat out shoot's.

I have an older 870 Max Gobbler 23” with an original Jelly .665 in it. It throws nice patterns with a lot of different shells Win Supreme 5’s, Hevi 6’s, Hevi 7’s and Mag Blends. Gonna try some TSS 9’s in it this year.
