Drilling and tapping shotgun receiver question

When drilling and tapping a receiver, do you drill completely they the receiver or just deep enough to get the proper thread depth?

Completely through on a receiver. On a barrel, just enough

I have always wondered how this effects the strength of the barrel?

I never drill all the way through any of the Remingtons I tap. There is plenty of metal not to.
