20 ga slug shells
20 ga slug shells
Might draw a tag for Illinois. I have put together a H & R 20 ga slug gun with BDC Nikon 3x9x40 scope.
What slug to buy? 2-3/4 or 3"..anyone suggest a slug?

I used Winchester Partition Gold and never had a complaint.

Re: 20 ga slug shells
Have had 2 of those guns and a buddy has 2. 3 shot the Hornady sst the best and one was extremely finicky and shot lightfields pretty well. I ended up selling that one before i found the one it liked best. I would try several types but deffinately try the sst. Those guns are capable of 200yds.

Be sure to head shoot so they don't fly off..

Re: 20 ga slug shells
Before SW rifles became legal in Ohio I shot a 20ga exclusively for deer gun season. I found the Winchester partition gold in either 2 3/4 or 3in to be not only super accurate but also devastating on deer. The2 3/4" 260gr @1900fps shot great in my Encore.
Re: 20 ga slug shells
Thanks for feedback, I will post pics tomorrow of scope. I wonder if I set up the weaver see through rings correctly ?

Re: 20 ga slug shells
Try 3" federal trophy copper and 3" Remington acutips. I fool with slug guns quite a bit and usually one of these 2 will do great in a designated 20ga slug gun.

Re: 20 ga slug shells
Why see-through rings? I can't stand those things....... Forces you to lift your head too far above the stock.
Re: 20 ga slug shells
My other rings wouldn't work. the dang scope hit the hammer. I don't like them either but right now I'm looking for a side hammer thumb mount because still hard to cock it.Grunt-N-Gobble wrote:Why see-through rings? I can't stand those things....... I have the foward leaning ring in front. Is that correct?
I don't know anyone down here that slug hunts with scope for deer. so I am trial and error. I usually hunt with muzzle loader in Illinois but decided to go this way..

That hammer spur is usually in the box with the gun. In with the papers.

My wife and I both shoot 870 20ga. slug guns. She shoots the Lightfield 2 3/4 Hybrid Expanders @385 gr. I shoot the Federal Trophy Copper in 3 in 275 gr. Both shoot great in our guns.I don't think the rings really matter which is in front.Probably designed to adjust the eye relief.
Put you plans in the nail scarred hands.

Re: 20 ga slug shells
deff go with with 3" Remington Accutips. The Savage 220 20ga I had was a beast with the accutips and killed a buck with a broke leg at 185 yards with it.
The old federal barnes expanders that are no longer made were awesome. The rem accutips are better shooters though. Light fields shoot good also
Come to Indiana after Illinois and kill a hoobilly buck

Mine prefers Win Partition Golds, but it's a 12ga.

Re: 20 ga slug shells
best slug guns ever devised are the Savage 220 20ga bolt guns
they will shoot 250 yards
But now we have rifle season here in Indiana. can't wait to get my daughter on a good buck with the 243 Styer

Re: 20 ga slug shells
Every gun is different . I have killer 4 Bucks and several does in Illinois with 3" Remington Accutips . My 220 shoots really good with them , but I shot a bunch of different brands to find out . Hornady where second best .
Re: 20 ga slug shells
I have the same gun and have shot every 20 gauge slug available thru it. The Remington AccuTips in both the 2.75" and 3" loadings had tighter groups by far and were the most consistent.
