Overnight Trip

Post by CamoMan4025 »

Well, myself, son, step-son and good friend planned a overnight trip into a GMA (Game Management Area) outside of Front Royal, VA. My step-son who is a former Marine was our navigator. It was our plan to hike in, hunt a little then stay overnight and then hunt today. The weather was crap and we probably shouldn't have even gone....but we did. This is a 4,000 acre state owned piece of land. It was just a tad over 2 miles into where we pitched camp. We got the camp set up and went and took our guns for a short walk. We hunted a couple of hours and didn't see a thing. We had a couple of drinks, fixed steaks and chilled out....well until the rain set in. It poured last night and believe it or not, we didn't get wet. Woke up to a heavy fog and miserable conditions. We got the fire started again and then at this point decided to chill for a little then head out. One of us probably drank way too much............well, no probably to it. All I know is he was the oldest guy there and should have known better. That unknown individual was under the impression that we pretty much needed to eat and drink all we took in so we didn't have to pack it out. Well, none of us had ever done anything like this before except for my step-son, but it wasn't a hunting trip, it was while he was a Marine. So I had 20+ years and 30 lbs overweight on those young bucks! I feel like I at least accomplished something by making it in and out alive. Lets just say there was no level ground!

That's me on the left then my son, step-son and our buddy Matt

I just happened to be bent over a log trying to stretch my back out and they were making rude comments....dang Brokeback Mountain :o :o :o :o

Heading Out

It’s all good till you hear the banjo!!
May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

Very well put! An adventure and an accomplishment all in one. You did a hell of a job. Not too many people could walk that far let alone haul all their stuff with them. You were maybe a little heavy on food....most of the weight I carried were extra dry clothes! I can’t wait till next year!

P.S. I’m the guy on the far right.

I used to love to backwoods camp with my father and friends. Pop always looked forward to it.
Have not done it in quite a few years now. Maybe someday soon.

Did they ever laugh and poke fun at you?

If they didn’t when y’all made it back to civilization then they might think better of you

Keep camping out off the grind. You will get use to it. And maybe drop them extra weight as well.

Looks like you all had a fun trip in not so great conditions.

Used to do a lot of that carrying a flintlock and wearing a breechcloth leggins and moccasins, with a Whitney blanket.
nowadays I need a pretty good sleeping bag to stay warm.

Of course I was always careful to never bend over a rock like that, you know only wearing a breechcloth and all.

We did have fun and this was a test run. We are going to try to make this an annual trip, maybe different locations.

I don't know about other places but you can always find free spots here, in Oregon: http://anglersandarchery.com/ It's also a beatiful place with amazing sea views, if you are into them.
