Anybody gonna be killin until Turkey season

Post by Shooter »

I usually get after the crows about this time.
Problem is, they are already starting to pair off and are more weary now.
Not near as easy to call them as in the summer and fall.
I'd love to shoot some coyotes, but never did much good.
I could always take Scratch's lead, and go catch some crappie I guess.
Lily has been after me, to take her Trout fishing below the dam.

What are most of you guys going to be doing for the next few months??

Jr, never figured you to be a coon chaser. We have a family living in a huge tree in the front yard.
Used to kill them many years ago. Was out setting limblines years ago with bluegills, and one was on the bank watching me. I offered one to him, but took some time before he trusted me.
The next day, he was waiting for me. Within a week, he had his whole family coming out, and had them taking fish right out of my hand,... Never could kill another one after that,...lol
Brian, wish we had some grouse here, used to love hunting them when I was younger.
I don't know if the coyotes have taken thier toll, or what. We just don't have many anymore.
Ma, Love them tree rats, we have quite a few on our place. They don't have much pressure around here.
GLS, have never seen a snipe here in Mid TN, but we have tons of woodcocks. Problem is, they are just starting to show and do thier evening flight dances, and the season ended a month ago,.. Oh well.

Since the end of goose season I have been ice fishing. I live on a 75 acre private lake and the crappies are 10-12 inches and the gills are 7-9. My buddies and I have harvested approx 300 so far. That lake is chuck full and needs some thinning out before these crappies die.

I'm hoping to take one more problem deer in our Urban Archery Season. Kinda weird, huntin' in the hood, but they all eat good.

Still grouse hunting through the end of Feb. Had to retire my world class setter this year at age 12. So now, I have to rely on an invitation from a couple of buddies that have dogs.

Probably work on the local crow population a bit as well.

Can't wait for turkey season.

We duck hunted up until the last week of January. Did better than I usually do on the woodies. I've killed about 25 squirrels since the first of January. Rabbit hunted last Saturday and didn't do much. Going to a pretty good hunt this coming Saturday. Been coon huntin 3 or 4 times with the neighbor's teenage boy so he won't have to go alone. Coon huntin ain't really my thing. I'm usually in the bed by the time the dogs get warmed up good. Only thing I've never had luck with was the coyotes. Sneaky boogers they are.

Turkey season starts in about a month and the birds are struttin already. :)

We did a lot of the same snoot slammed on the ducks pretty hard. Chased some whitetails and now gearing up for some small game and turkeys. Might chase some hogs after that with the bow

I finally took Scratch's advice and went for Crappie today.
It was a little cool and rainy, and was glad the boat worked like clockwork, since it has not been
in the water since september.
Lily and I caught one limit between us, so granny's frying them for lunch tomorrow.
Finally took Lily for Trout too, last week.
It is a 45 min drive, and there is no one to call and ask about the water and such.
With all of the rain we have been having this winter, I was too stupid to realize that the water was
way too high and and too much current to fish,... Oh well.

Just curious... I know a ton of folks who coon hunt. Some eat them, most don't. But they are always eaten by someone who wants them. Do you eat them? If so, how do you usually cook them? I've eaten coon a few times and it's not bad. IF it's done right.

No pixie dust for the coons. Just a CCI 36 grain hollow point .22 and my BL 22 with open sights. I don't have any coon dogs, but have a buddy with some.

Here's some of the the action from Friday night. Had 4 treed, and 4 killed. Trying to thin them egg eaters out a bit...

I went Saturday night with the neighbor's boy and his dog treed 2 slick trees. I got a coon in a trap right now that he's gonna use to train his dog. Then hopefully we will do better... cause my recliner is much more comfortable than hip deep water and slick trees!
