Day 10 of the 2019 Ohio Squirrel Season

Post by HunterGKS »

I got set-up in a woods behind I haven’t hunted yet this year. It was 12:34 with a breeze,
sunny, & 83 degrees which is a little warmer than I like. As I neared my spot, a fox moved
to & over the creek bank. I did a sneak to the edge but it was gone.

At 12:34, I saw a fox on the other side of the creek. It moved around for a few minutes
before disappearing into the underbrush. At 02:04, 1 appeared at the base of a tree in
another spot across the creek. It ran about 15’ up & moved all around the tree waving
its flag like crazy. I watched it until 03:02 it went to the back side of the tree. I moved
to a small tree & scoped for the bushy. It was then that I realized there were only a couple
of really small openings where I could squeeze through a shot so I sat back down hoping it
would come down & show itself some place where I could get a shot. At 03:18, it moved
up the tree out of sight.

A t 03:55, 1 showed up in front of me at the base of a tree giving me an open shot. The
only problem was, it had its back to me &, if I would have shot, it would have blown the
bushy up. It moved up the ridge out of sight.

At 04:15, I spotted move near the squirrel tree across the creek figuring that the fox had
come down. I watched the movement in the undergrowth & thought I knew where it was
heading. I moved back to the small tree for a rest when a tail popped into view for a second.
That’s a strange looking tail for a squirrel. Maybe it has mange. I followed the movement &,
when it stood up, I realized that there was now 1 less pasture piggy in this world to eat beans
& dig holes where holes shouldn’t be dug.

It was pretty hot by 05:00 so I headed in with the temp at 88. I plan to hunt “my” primary
turkey woos in the morning, weed eat the ditch crossing to “my” secondary turkey woods &
hunt there in the afternoon for the 1st time this season.
