Day 19 of the 2018 Ohio Squirrel Season

Post by HunterGKS »

I got to “my” primary turkey woods at 07:40 overcast, breezy, & 68. This is the 1st squirrel hunt
this year in the woods so I didn’t know what to expect. The answer came pretty quickly.

At 07:46, I saw some branches bouncing & saw a fox making its way to a tree which it came down.
At 07:52, it went a few feet up a tree, the .17 barked, & a nice young female hit the ground. At
07:55, 2 came down a tree directly in front of me playing Ring-Around-the-Rosy & went right back
up the same way. They stopped several times going down & up on the front side of the tree. It
was still a little dark in the woods & they blended right in with the tree & all I could see was their
tails waving so I didn’t get to make either of their ashes fall down. I watched them moving in the
tops until 08:95 when they disappeared.

At 08:56, I saw branches bouncing again & saw a bushy moving to another tree & down to the
ground. At 09:04, he hoped up on a dead fall & immediately fell dead. It was a big old bore
which will be in the pressure cooker longer than usual. I imagine he is a tough old SOS
(that’s Son of a Squirrel for the uninitiated. LOL) At 09:25, the wind picked up quite a bit.

That’s was it for the morning so I headed back to the truck & did a short walk-about along the
north edge of the west section of woods. I was done at 11:50, temp 78, sunny, & windy.

Thx Louis. I use a .17 HMR & it will flat tear up a squirrel so a head shot is the only option.
