Day 14 of the 2018 Ohio Squirrel Season

Post by HunterGKS » September 14th, 2018, 4:59 pm

After swapping the cards in my trail cam (lots of does & fawns but no bucks),
I sat down at12:25 with a temp of 73, overcast, calm in the woods but breezy
in the tree tops.

At 12:45, a spotless fawn came in to about 40 yards & wandered off. It came
back within minutes & came in to 20 yards doing the head-bob & 2 foot stomp
dance. It blew once & ran back about 10 yards before coming back in & walking
around behind me before wandering off at 01:00.

At 01:05, I saw a red running around in the tree tops &, as usual, the PIA got a
pass. At 01:10, there was a hug racket in a tree about 20 yards in front of. I
though maybe bushies chasing when a dead limb came crashing down.

At 01:40, The Trees Were Alive with the Sounds of Foxes!! Hickories started hitting
the ground from the big shag in front of me. I spotted a fox bouncing around in the
top before it moved from tree-to-tree-to-where-the-heck-did-it-go. At 02:00 another
fox appeared in the same shag & followed the 1st along the same route in the tree
tops & went down a tree & hit the ground where I lost sight of it. And the nuts kept
on falling. At 02:20, another fox followed the same route as the 1st tree but went
down a different tree. This 1 would come down my side of the tree when there was
leaf cover & went to the back side when it would have been in the open, like it knew
I was there.

And the nuts kept on coming. At 02:35, I caught motion out of the corner of my right
eye. I turned my head just a little & could only see a tail as the fox had stopped on a
fallen sapling with an 8” tree between us. It pretty much had me pinned down. It
jumped down & started rooting around. Every time it had its head down or turned
away, I moved just a little. This was working fine until I had the .17 half way shouldered.
It must have seen me move as it started to move off not at a run but more of a saunter
thinking: “Maybe if I act cool, he won’t shoot me” & I didn’t. The pic of the trees &
the tail are using the dead squirrel.

At 02:43, I couple of nuts dropped & there was a bushy on the side of a small tree &
stopped heading up. The .17 barked at it causing it to drop a little & grab the tree.
A few seconds later, it hit the ground & started to flip & flopped all over the place.
NUTS!! This is usually a sign of a bad shot. As the pics bear out, it wasn’t a bad shot
but a great shot!! The devastation a 17 gr. 17 HMR ballistic bullet is amazing!!

And the nuts kept falling when, at 02:49, another fox headed out using the same route
as the others.

I headed to the house at 04:00 with the temp at 78, still overcast, & a little breezy.
