Day 33 Young’s Woods 10/03/2017 P.M.

I went back to the woods at 01:25 with a temp of 83, clear skies, & windy. I had planned on changing the card in my trail cam & heading home but it was considerably cooler inside the woods. Today is the last day I’ll be able to hunt this week as I have a lot of catching up to do as well as a turn-around trip to SE IN, so I decided to sit for awhile.

At 02:30, I caught motion to my left & turned my head just a little. I spotted a fox at about the same time as it saw me. I pulled out the old playbook & decided to try the old standby Statue of Liberty play. The squirrel was frozen in place by my lack of motion for at least a minute when it moved forward towards the line of scrimmage a couple of steps. It continued to watch me & I still didn’t go in motion. It moved forward again & watched. The next time it moved, its head was blocked by a fallen limb & I was able to go in motion by moving my hands to the forearm & trigger while getting reading to throw a forward pass. It jumped up on another fallen branch & I slowly pitched the rifle to my shoulder for a shot but it was a busted play as I missed. The fox jumped about 2’ in the air & twisted around in mid-air heading in the opposite direction. It looked for help in the secondary by jumping on the side of the nearest shagbark hickory tree. This was a defensive mistake that proved costly, similar to that of a place kicker clanking the ball off the right upright on a last second field goal attempt. If the squirrel would have gone to the backside, it would have been game over with the score George – 0 Squirrel – 1. Instead, it tried a stop action move on the side of the shag. I got called for targeting as I hit her right in the head but the final score held up, George – 1 Squirrel – 0.

At 02:58, I heard something moving directly behind me in the leaves. The noise stopped so I thought that, if it was a squirrel, it must have gone up a tree. I stood up & watched for about 15 minutes & saw nothing. I’m not sure what it was.

I moved to my deer stand at 03:45. The wind really picked up & it was pretty warm on the edge of the woods so I headed in at 04:30 with the temp at 84.
