Monday 10/31/16 Halloween Hunt

Post by HunterGKS »

I hit the woods behind the house today at 12:22 with a medium wind & low 50s. At 12:44, a fox moved in from near where I had parked the 4-wheeler. It was moving away but stopped long enough for a shot. It started flipping & flopping all over the place leading me to think: “dead squirrel” until it ran towards me (I missed). It moved behind a large rotting blowdown where I could only see its tail. After several seconds, it started the squirrel hop until it got to a tree & went about 10’ up the side. There was a sharp crack followed by a thud when the young male hit the ground.

At 01:02, I spotted 1 way to the south. I watched it until 01:15 when he moved further south & disappeared. At 01:30, I decided to check the shelled corn field. After not seeing anything, I slipped down the 4-wheeler trail to a spot where I have sat in years past. There is another trail that goes south & curves back to the east around a small pond. I took off down that trail until it branched out going SW. Decisions, Decisions…….. I decided to take the SW trail. I had only walked a few minutes when I spotted a fox moving across in front of me. It stopped just long enough for a snap shot which hit a large female in the rib cage. Not the best shot but, upon clearing it, there was little damage & it was easy to skin. It was 01:56.

I got back to my spot at 02:10. At 02:46, a fox came in from the south & played hid-n-seek with me. It stopped for a marginal shot, which I took. It jumped at least 1’ in the air, flew to the nearest tree, & flew up the side about 40’ before stopping.
Crack + Thud = Young Male.

At 03:26, I saw movement off to my right but never saw what it was. I thought it might be headed to the field so decided to wait 15-20 minutes & then check the field. At 03:41, I saw 2 moving to my right but they moved off to the north. At 04:09, another 1 showed up to my right but disappeared.

At 04:23, a fox moved along the south edge of the woods. It reduced the distance by 1/2 but there was too much stuff between us. It got even closer but there was always something between us. It eventually headed back south at 04:50 & I headed home at 05:00

The 2 misses must have been really close 2 cause both bushies to go nuts like they did. Today was my 1st 3 fox day this year. Both were very young males. They barely had any steak & their potatoes were almost non-existent. I would guess late summer early fall hatch. I know have 28 foxes, 1 grey, & 1 red & would normally call it a season but the weather is supposed to be decent the rest of the week so I may hit the woods a few more times to add to the freezer cache. You can never have enough squirrel meat on hand.

One of the males had an off color tail. I have never seen a fox with a tail like that. I took a pic with a “normal” tail for comparison.

Sounds like a nice hunt.

I used to really enjoy hunting squirrels with a Marlin 22 lever action rifle and a 4x scope. Fox squirrels were my favorite.

It was fun, thx.

I use a Savage bolt in .17 with a 3x9 scope set to 4. Having the ability to crank it to 9 has come in handy a few times. Twice I have had foxes hang up on small forks & have had to shot the branch to drop them. I have also made a few long shots that I couldn't have with the 4x.
