Lily's First Greenhead

Post by Shooter »

And first kill with her new Youth model pump 20 too.
With all the rain we had recently, we were unable to get to our favorite spot in the swamp, where the big open area is. We had to stay back a couple hundred yards. Did not matter though. For some reason, the dang Ducks roosted on the water last nite. Only a few were out flying this morn.
Almost had a bunch to take home. With some sweet feed callin, and pulling the jerk string decoys, a group of 6 or 8 came swimming in from way out. When they only needed to come another 10 or 20 yds too be in range, this single flew in and landed too close to Lily.
Needless to say, she took care of business! She asked why I didn't shoot at the others. I said well, I left my TSS at home! :toothy7:

Too late. She was so proud of that bird, she went straight to work boiling water to pluck him.
Yep, love the big timber swamp. It's beautiful!! Next time we go I'll try and get a pic. Oh wait, Lily says she has a few.
Here is the morn we went in before daylight at 24 degrees, and the water was not frozen, but 3 hours later, it started to freeze.
This is the same morn Little Nelli was giving me fits.

Derrick, it's funny you said that. You have actually been there, but didn't have any water in it at the time. Just since that pic was taken a week or so ago, it is almost 2 feet deeper today. That is the shallow part where we come out of the swamp.
If you remember the time we sat awhile and called. Then we heard one gobble a ways out, and went after him. Then we ran into those guys, and then saw the "Tent" in the middle of the timber, and got a chuckle out of it! That is where the swamp is.

WTG Lily. Talk about good eating. I didn't know how much I loved duck 'til a buddy of mine marinated some sliced mallard breast in Dale's, then sauteed in butter 'til med. rare. Just about swallowed my tongue.

Boiling water?
I have a large crab cooking pot. I use it not to scald birds to pluck, but to melt Gulf Wax (paraffin) to clean ducks and snipe.
One block per duck, 1 block for 3-4 snipe.
Fill up pot to about a foot depth of water. Add blocks and start up stove or burner.
On a duck, cut off head, wings and one foot. Rough pluck to allow paraffin to penetrate. Don't pluck to thoroughly or it will defeat the wax coating.
Fill up a five gallon bucket with cold water.
When wax melts, turn off heat. Hold duck by remaining foot and lower into water and paraffin. The wax will float on the water and coat the bird as it goes in and out of the water. Push down with a stick to fully submerge. Bring out of water, let drip a second or two and repeat. Drop duck into cold water for a minute or two. Pull out and let cool until wax is hard. Peel wax like an orange. It will pull off down, feathers and end up looking like it was professionally processed. The unabsorbed wax can be reused and it will cool into a disk on top of the water when it cools. Gil
