ALPS Outdoors Grand Slam vest

Post by Gobbler »

I bought this vest at the convention. So far I like it. I am going to show some pictures and list the features. I want to hunt with it this year and give kind of a review of what I liked and didn't like. The vest cost $99.00 so it is less expensive than the other sit anywhere vest. I have a Little big horn sit anywhere but its getting old.

So here are the features listed by ALPS:
Sit anywhere kickstand frame
Adjustable legs and fast locking technology
Removable diaphragm call pocket
Thick padded fold away seat
Detachable shoulder straps for shooting comfort
Two slate call pockets
Striker Pocket holds 3 strikers and one locator call
Locator call pocket
Smartphone sleeve allows use of phone while in pocket
Protective and silent box call pocket
Five shell loops
H2O compatible
Large game bag
Two side water bottle pockets
Two zippered mesh inside pockets

The additional two pot call holsters hanging from the shoulder straps are additions by me.

I will take more pictures of packing the vest. To show what you can carry.

That looks really nice. Is the kick stand system pretty comfortable?

I have put the vest on and it is comfortable to wear. I have sat down inside the convention and at home and its great. But I want to see how it works this weekend in the woods. I also want to see if I can sit against a tree with it. My other vest won't sit up against a tree( little big horn).

My question is...do you sink in the ground? I like the idea of being able to set up without a tree, but the feet would need wider bases for the softer ground in some areas.

Thats a great question. I am going to hunt with it in Florida, Texas, TN, and NE. I'll be able to answer that better. But I'm trying it this weekend and patterning my 12 and 20.
So I can give preliminary answer.

Detachable mouth call case hooks to vest shoulder strap. Its nice but lets see how long it lasts and if it stays on.

On both sides of vest is this stetch material with straps to hold water bottles or what ever. I like them.
Image

Here is the one box call holster. It actually works great and keeps the call silent. It fit standard size call. I have not put a long box in it yet.
Image

Locator call pocket and cell phone carrier. I am not totally convince I will use this for locator calls. I wear my crow. The owl was hard to put away. I still need to see if my S5 droid will fit.
Image

I don't care for the striker pocket. Nobody carries three and its hard to fit three in there. Also if your strikers are too long they won't fit. I will have to figure out my striker situation. Maybe in one of the water bottle pockets. The shell carrier works fine.
Image

The vest is comfortable and light weight. I just need to spend time with it now and see if will tote all I want to carry. It has two big inside pockets. Plus it has a nice game carrier in the back.

I heard they went like hot cakes at the convention. Looks like a great vest. Be good to hear how your weekend test run goes. It looks heavy with that stand. ???

The vest didn't sink in to the soft dirt at my hunt camp. But I learned I just cant sit down with it on. I have to take it off and then sit in it. No big deal I did that with the Little Big Horn.

Image

The vest full of gear weighed 11lbs. It my weigh 2 or 3 pounds more depending on what else I add like a thermocell etc.

So far so good.

I'd be careful pulling on any of those strings, straps or loops while sitting against a tree. Looks an awful lot like an ejection seat for a fighter jet.

nice vest but seems like the pot and strikers holders dangling from shoulders would be annoying when walking and also dealing with gun sling. I like other features though

Ya I added those. And you are correct they are annoying. I will have to come up with something else. Actually I don't nee all those calls. Thanks for telling me about the gun. No wonder it was easy walking around with the vest. I forgot you actually carry a gun while turkey hunting   .

Hey we all are not a young spry turkey hunter like yourself. Believe me when my fat a$$ hits that seat it will not be going anywhere.

why can't you just sit down in it? Is it because of the back legs or the frame? I am assuming at 11 pounds the weight is evenly distributed and doesnt feel heavy??
