The Season Has Started

Post by GOLD HUNTER »

We were on vacation the 1st week of bow season here in Va. We were at Topsail Island, NC. Got back on Saturday and started bow hunting on Monday morning. Had some young turkeys come in to my set up next to a small creek and got this young hen with the crossbow on N/F land. First kill of the season on a cool October morning with the leaves just beginning to turn color. We've had a lot of bad storms lately but its supposed so clear up after today.

Hope you guys have a great fall season.

Way to get it done! If you still have the wings I would be interested in getting them from you. I would cover any of the shipping costs. Looking for some hen wing bones to try to make a couple calls for a competition.

There are no numbers on any of my clocks below 8. Then all of a sudden, 2 days before turkey season they appear. Then right after the season they disappear.
What's up with that

NICE!!!! I'm jealous!

The bones in the feet had a violent meeting with a doorway, and I now I have to wear a special shoe for six weeks. It looks like this fall won't work out for me.

Montana's fall turkey season starts Sept. 1 and goes to Jan. 1 , 4 full months and both sexes are open with no limitations, but if you shot a spring gobbler in most of the state you can't hunt the fall because only 1 tag a year, unless in the Flathead Valley or near the S. Dakota border. Too far for me to travel to shoot something that doesn't make good table fare.

WW, the tom I got this spring was not that old ,maybe 3 yrs., and was only 18 pounds and it was roasted in the oven and it was so damn tough it almost couldn't be sliced and no way could it be chewed. it was like sidewalls of a truck tire. It went straight to the garbage. I never have had a good eating wild turkey here, all are gamey as hell tasting and tough as a innertube to tire sidewall. Fun to call in and shoot and if it wasn't for getting a ticket for wanton waste of a game animal,I would cut the beard off and tail and leave the rest for some desperate coyote.

Try cutting the breast meat into nuggets or strips. Then marinate in buttermilk for half or full day. Then batter and deep fry.
If that doesn't do it for ya,... then you are SOL.

Shooter, I am going to try something with the next one. I was thinking about soaking it in a cure brine for a couple of days after I inject it with Morton's Tender Quick (that does break the meat down and make it edible) and put it in my smoker with some apple wood for a few hours and give it a good smoke and cook at the same time.

For frying the buttermilk and garlic salt is great. Add some white gravy and homemade biscuits.....I'm getting hungry.

Grumpy something else you can try is to cut the breast into nuggets. Add some garlic salt, meat tenderizer, creole seasoning, and some Worcester sauce. Let it set overnight and then slap it on the grill. Its so tender you don't need teeth.

I agree....you gotta boil it......in Crisco!!! Cut up in nuggets and fried is definitely my favorite, but I like it on the grill too. Tender as mother's love.
