One of the worst days ever.

Post by Johndoe »

I had to put my "Sweet Baby Pink" down this morning.

One of the best dogs ever. She was 17. Trained many of my deer beagles over the years.
Hardest thing I have ever done, but I know it was the right thing to do.

There are no numbers on any of my clocks below 8. Then all of a sudden, 2 days before turkey season they appear. Then right after the season they disappear.
What's up with that

Its so damn tough.. I had to put my first boxer down I had since I was 15.. I have never cried so much in my life.. I had to wear sunglasses in public.. Said I was never getting another dog.. 5 years later got another one that looks the same, best thing I ever did and realized I missed 5 great years of companionship..

Hang in there man, Remember the good times.

I hear ya JD. When my Katie was at the end of her cancer, I knew I had to do it, and was the right thing to do,... but it is the worst thing I ever went through. She was a complete Lady to the end.
She will be gone 6 years in Dec, and I still tear up thinking of her almost everyday.
It is amazing how just an animal can get so deep into your heart!!!
I'm hurting with you Buddy!

I feel for you. I've had to do it three times and it's kills me each time. I've learned getting another dog helps with the healing process, but does not fill the void of losing a friend of 17 years.

Same as you guys when I put down my 16 year old GSP going on 2 years ago. She was a great bird Hunter for Pheasants, but also a very good Duck dog. She was my constant companion riding shotgun in my truck. Putting down a family member is not easy for anyone. Very sad time.

Not a easy thing to do but a part of having a dog or pet. We had to put ours down and it was hard. Sorry for your loss!

I've done it 3 times as well, nothing about it is fun. At times you think it's silly to be this emotional over a dog. I've noticed that the grieving period is as bad as losing a human family member but the healing process is a lot better and faster. I'm sorry for your loss JD, losing a companion after 17 years is very tough. You did make the right decision, your Sweet Baby Pink is no longer in pain or suffering. On the bright side you got to spend 17 wonderful years with her, think of the memories you guys had and shared. It's never easy but think of the good times y'all had, it helps.

So sorry to hear about your puppy, J.D. That is a tremendous loss and oh so hard on the people that loved her. I miss my beloved Springer, everyday.
As our beloved pets, they are dependent on us for everything... Including, knowing when the time has come to put them down. If she could talk, she would have told you to do the same. Her memories will last your lifetime, and the time will come when you can mention her name without a tear in your eye. I promise you this..
Godspeed, Sweet Baby Pink..

Thanks to everyone. Have had dogs all my life and lots of special ones. Hate to say I loved one more than others but she was truly one of a kind. My wife at the time took her around as a pup and no one wanted her. I told them they would give her a complex. I traded a breeding for my wife's dog for her. She was a homely puppy. Turned into a pretty girl and and a best friend.

John, the best place to bury a dog is in your heart. We've all been where you are, and if we play our cards right, we'll do it again. I put down my old Aussie 3 years ago August and a day doesn't go by without thinking of him. The easiest decision was deciding I had to do it. The hardest part was living without him. My current crew has been a Godsend. We never second guess when it's time to give our friends the deaths they deserve. You did what you had to do. It's the kindest thing you can do for an old friend. Sorry for your loss. Gil

It was the easiest/hardest thing to do. I know for sure I did the right thing. No doubt.
I thank everyone for their kind words.

It is amazing how much longer little dogs live than larger ones. 17 years is a big chunk of a man's life. I know two folks whose Jack Russells lived to be 19. It is unusual for a Jack to live that long because they usually have a high mortality rate for accidental death--like challenging a tractor pulled reel lawn mower, array, etc. or attempting to bite a truck tire whilst it moves.
