Well, I reckon I'm done this year
Dang these crappy weekends of rain and foggy morns.
I knew the weekend was gonna be yucky, so I took Lily to a farm that borders the WMA on thursday morn. It was a good gobblin morn, must have heard 5 or 6 in the distance, but I was pretty sure I knew where one roosted. Got set up on a fence row too late. The bird was already in the field and would only come to 50 yds, and she thought it was too far.
Ended up playing with that bird for seemed like forever, and finally got him a little closer with some purrs, but he could smell a rat. I told her he was not coming any closer, so shoot him.
40.05yds, and the little 20ga did it's job.
A little over 20 lb, 10 3/4" beard, and 15/16th spurs. He scored out at 60.64.
She was a happy camper again, and was wound up to go this morn for another trip.
I was really happy at her gun handling skills of late, until this morn.
We went to a spot I had been hearing a bird, but they were tight lipped this morn.
We hit 4 or 5 good spots within an hour, but nothing but silence. I told her, lets drive over and check out the place where I wanted to spend the last day of the season, just to have a listen, and see if anyone else was in the area. We stood around and walked just a short piece, when one gobbled fairly close at 8:00am. Got all our camo put back on, and pulled out my new Ghillie suit that came in friday. Five minutes later we were set up, and I yelped one time. He gobbled within 100yds, so i just stayed silent and waited. It was about 10 mins, when Lily gave a light whistle.
Big boy came in full strut, looked like a truck coming through the thick hardwoods.
He had a hen with him, and they took thier sweet time getting closer. 45 mins must have went by, with him in view the whole time, but still out of range. Lily told me later, that she could hear her heart beating. I didn't want to tell her mine was pounding pretty dang hard too,..lol
It was one of the most beautiful sights, and hunts I've ever had. It seemed like an eternity, but we loved every second of it.
He finally came to within 50 yds, and I started whispering to her to shoot. I finally lost count how many times i said to shoot, cause i wanted to hunt tomorrow, and didn't want to use my last tag.
He got to my left following the hen, and i knew Lily couldn't shoot, so soon as his head came back into view, I turned the 6x8 mix loose. Heck of a morn to end my season.
Lily kept talkin about how exciting that was, and how beautiful the bird was, and how big he looked in the woods.
I told her Yep, it don't get any better than that!!
He had a 11" beard, 20 lb 11oz, and 1 3/16th spurs.
Take care everyone, Tommy

Re: Well, I reckon I'm done this year
Thanks so much everyone for your thoughts and kind words.
I have really enjoyed getting to know so many new folks this past year, that I now consider Buddies and even friends now. I knew a few of you from the other place, but things are more,.. well,... friendly and fun here.
Thanks Doug, and Rick, for having a great place to talk Turkey!
Take care everyone, and have a great summer,... And don't catch too many fish!!!
Tommy
