Hunting Wyoming....
Im headed to Wyoming next april to start my quest at towards getting my grandslam...
I am going to be there for the opener in the hunt area that I will be hunting..Colony..
Anyone every hunt there?
What should I expect?
Im hunting 30.000 arces of private land and Im going to be there for 6 days...
I would love any info that anyone has to offer...if the weather is cold..I dont mine..remember Im from Ontario
Now I have entertained the idea that its possible that i could kill a gobbler the first morning....what should I do then as apparently Im very close the Montana and South Dakota border....I need a backup plan...and its never to early to plan it out...but overall my first priority is to get a merriams...
Thanks Perry

Re: Hunting Wyoming....
If you kill out early you might want to set up a black hills hunt in South Dakota. I don't know how far away you will be but If its close I would apply for a tag I thinks it 100 and something. Well worth the back up plan.
Man your going to have fun.

Hunted WY for 50 Minutes.. Set up in the snow, 400 yards away from the roost.. Daylight Yelped up 2 Longbeards, Bang Sal kills one.. Hit the call, 2 more come running, Bang Buddy kills one, Start yelping 2 more come Bang other buddy kills one.. Yelp again 2 more come running bang I kill a double beard.. Took a kid out that afternoon and called one up in a half hour.. I do not know what I was saying that morning but it sure as hell worked.. There was probably 200 hens in that roost.
Would go back, but heard the winters whacked the birds the last two years.. So much they went back to a one bird limit like when I was there.

Tom, I love that picture. Dang, those Merriams are pretty looken. Wish, I could work it into my schedule to go after one, but don't see that happening. If me and my lady weren't hunting Kansas/Iowa for a week, I'd hit South Dakota.

Heck states ought to charge you 200 bucks for a tag like your great state does LOL ... Sal and I hit Iowa a few years back, quickest 400 bucks we ever spent including the casino.. We had 6+ gobs in gun range off the roost, she killed out.. I held off and fille mine an hour or so later..Turkey Talker wrote:wish i owned 30,000 acres of gobbler country.
My bud in the pic moved out there and is engaged to a girl whoms dad owns 90000 acres of Prime whitetail, mulie and gobbler ground... We never had to step foot on it... We hunted one small ranch, had permission on the ranch that Dick and Chris Kirby hunted when they went out there.. Rancher was a great guy, never hunted there, but stopped and BSd with him for a long time after tagging out.. Great people out there, he was trying to get me to come out bowhunting...Turkey Talker wrote:wish i owned 30,000 acres of gobbler country.
I will post more pics from WY when I get done goose hunting this AM.. I got a bunch

I think you apply in dec or jan and its around 100 dollars. Well worth it even if you don't get to go. Say you tag out in Wyoming. You have your black hills tag for SD you drive over and tag out. Just go south to Nebraska. You can buy tags through the internet and print them out. You could have a dream hunt.perrysbirds wrote:Im wondering can I just drive into South Dakota and buy a tag over the counter....Gobbler wrote:If you kill out early you might want to set up a black hills hunt in South Dakota. Take one rock for each tag and you'll probably tag out. On second thought take one extra just in case you miss onceperrysbirds wrote:Thanks guys...great advice for sure....

Seriously it should be a fun trip. Lots of pretty country out that way loaded with wildlife. Good luck and have fun.

I have done a little more reasearch and from what I have learned that Im not going to be too far from a place called "Sturgis" SD...
that has lots of national forest to hunt...
For anyone that knows this can they confirm this....
I can hunt Colony WY and if I get lucky and tag out early..how far of a drive would it be to the National Forest in SD to a place called "Sturgis"...
Thanks once again guys....Perry
