Dads A-5

Finally got around to putting up a real avatar. This is a pic of the Turkey I killed with My dads A-5 and a load Reloader helped me with. My dad passed before I started turkey hunting so we never had a chance to do it together.
I called this bird and another into the gas line on my lease, right after 9 deer ran over him and his buddy. I got turned enough and dropped him at about 25yds. I sat for a minute then went out to get him. I went back and sat down with Dad for a minute and some tears. Then I got drunk for the rest of the day. One of the best days ever.

Yep, them dam deer give me fits too.

My Pop's last turkey was a memorable one too. He had already had his accident, so I had to almost carry him in, on one I had roosted.
When the turkey finally came, I had to get behind him to hold him up, and to help hold the gun up.
His aim was still true, and the Win XR-HD 4s did thier job at 43yds.
He made me laugh, because he was so happy, that he could go back and tell his doctor, he could still do it.
Cause ole Doc had told him he could never hunt again, let alone get anything.

Congrats on a great bird and a great story. Every turkey is special, but the ones taken with a gun with sentimental value are sweeter still.

Your story reminded me of my dad. I called in his one and only turkey. He had hunted them off and on for a few years without success. I took him to my honey hole, a plateau and known strut zone high on the side of a mountain in WNC. My cousin named that spot "Puke Ridge" because he thought he was going to puke from the climb the first time I took him up there. It was in 1998, and my Dad was 61. We didn't make it all the way to our destination by sun-up, and had to just sit down where we were and listen to the show as 3 birds sounded off about our level and then slowly make there way up to the plateau. After things calmed down, we continued up to the plateau and got set up. We sat there and I called sporadically for four hours. Finally about noon we heard one gobble, and I knew he was coming. Dad killed him at 12:10, and his smile lit up the world.

He is 76 now and had a stroke back in October and is totally bedridden. I'm so glad I got to make that memory with him.

Sorry you never got to hunt with your dad, but I'm glad you got to kill one with his gun. He was there with you. I had a great time last year developing a load and killing one with my granddad's old Iver Johnson single shot...great memories.
