Opening Day

Post by ICDEDTURKES »

I went into early goose with no optimism.. Our area we scout has went from around 5000 birds for opener to about 500 tops over the past 5 years..

We had the best field in the area this morning.. I still had no optimism we always get screwed on opening day.. Well today worked out perfect.. Heavy fog, where the geese trust the call, upon trusting the call they saw the spread at about 80 yards an bowed up in the dekes..
6 man limit by 8

We truly could have killed 50 plus birds this morning if we would have brought more guys.. We had geese landing in the spread with 2 trucks in the field.

Wow,...sounds like you guys wailed on 'em! Seems like the best hunts are always when we expect the least.
...Wish we still had huntable numbers of Canada's down here. They're mostly all gone now,....short-stopping further north.
Great pic....

Man I love it.. It aint turkey hunting but dang close.. Birds can be really responsive to the call and you got to dot your Is and cross your Ts to pile them up day after day..

I will say though its one labor intensive sport.. We probably have 100 hours into scouting for this hunt and all the gas money that goes with it..

Nicely done, Tom. Looks like you guys/gals had a great morning. Glad to see it worked out. What do you do with them? Breast them and cook them, smoke them, make jerky? Or maybe all of the above? I'm not much on roasted goose, but I have heard that it is great smoked..Way to go!!! Mike
May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

We do a bunch of different stuff.. The jerky turns out very good, one time we had 200 lbs of bratwurst made and than passed it out to farmers and the rest we typically grill chunked and wrapped in bacon.. As much goose as we eat in the fall, I am suprised I dont honk

I cannot say that I have ever smoked um, but I love running the smoker, may have to do some research..
