Are there any Horticulturists or nut growers here?

Post by HunterGKS »

I planted 2 hazel nut trees about 5 years ago & they started producing small nuts the 2nd year.
This year, the 1 tree/bush was loaded with most of the clusters consisting of 4 nuts. The other
had a few but only 1 nut per cluster. All the nuts are a lot smaller then you get in a store. Is
there anything I can do to get bigger hazel nuts? Maybe pruning a lot of the many clusters?
Any assistance would be appreciated.

The larger nuts on the right are from the tree that produced only a few.

Hangin' or small nuts aside, as the former County Extension Director here in the Miami, FL area, my first recommendation to you would be contact your local county Extension office. The research based recommendations will be your best, non-biased info. The deal is, if the county agent doesn't have accurate info they can reach out to the Ohio State fruit/nut specialist on campus or a research farm. They will probably ask if you have done a soil analysis as well. No witchcraft BS from them.

When I was a kid growing up in Oklahoma, there were always hazel nuts and Brazil nuts in the Christmas treat bags at school. Never had them any other time of year. What a treat.

Good luck,
Don

Thanks Don. I'll look into that. What you said makes sense. I love hazel nuts.

My Sis makes a killer pecan pie so I got 2 hardy pecan trees that are doing real well.
Unfortunately, I didn't do due diligence. They won't produce pecans for 20-25 years
& I doubt that I'll be around.

Now that I’m 65, is it unusual that one of my nuts hangs lower than the other two? :dontknow:

I saw once where a little boy in china was born without eyelids so when they circumcised him they made him some eyelids but now the kid is cockeyed.

Pecans, now your talkin'! Our place in Oklahoma has a dozen or so 70-80 year old pecan trees, with some producing awesome quality nuts. Dad planted a couple papershell trees in a sub-irrigated bottom in front of the house. They produce nice big nuts for decorating the tops of pecan pies! Not much for eating by themselves with the lower oil content. Big as we all know, big nuts make a great impression! Had to say that with the degraded thread thingy!
