the only thing we worry about here is some deep snow and a possible tornado once or twice a year..

I'm in the mandatory evacuation zone which is land east of I95 here in Ga. I'm 3.5 miles from the salt marsh. We have an immense swath of salt marsh and rivers which can absorb surges and eat up wind. The marsh apron is about 10 miles wide and dotted with barrier islands and hammocks. Fortunately I am on what passes for a ridge in the lowcountry and I sit about 30-40 ft. above sea level. The old adage is "shelter for wind; evacuate for water" when it comes to hurricanes. I'm staying put. Yes, hurricane season does get old living near the SE coast. It's hard to plan trips, etc., this time of the year because these storms pop up within a week or so. Another one, Gabrielle, is leaving the spawning grounds near Africa heading to the east. Hurricane activity has gotten more frequent and the prediction is it will continue to do so. I've ridden out two direct hits in my life, a handful of side scrapes, and lots of near misses. I've evacuated twice; Floyd and Hugo, which both narrowly missed us. I have friends living in Beaufort, SC, which sits about 10' above sea level. If the arrival of Dorian coincides with the high King tides, there will be serious flooding from the surge. You sandpipers be safe and get out if it's low where you live. Gil

Dorian is about 90 miles SW of us and 90 miles off the coast heading NNW. Wind and rain is picking up and we still have power, surprisingly. I lose it every season, but then the neighbor's dog can fart and we lose power. This whole Dorian episode has been in slow motion, best described by a man in Florida whose quote I saw in the paper: "It's like being stalked by a turtle." Those poor folks in the Bahamas. It's not as if trucks can drive over and help them recover like it's done here. All the ferries servicing the Abacos have sunk. They are screwed.

Ha Ha, Iv'e never seen one move that slow-lack of steering currents. Im glad im on the West coast

Well here in the Miami area we dodged the big one again! Watching some aerial video and the pictures in the Bahamas gave me a chill. Had a tight spot in my chest just recalling what we went through in Andrew! There are numerous relief efforts here locally for the folks in the Bahamas. Churches, local and state government, non-profits, and cruise lines are organizing relief supplies and labor. Some folks have already done helicopter supply runs into the areas hardest hit. It will take years to rebuilt. Man, 48 hours of Cat 5 pounding didn't leave a lot standing.

My brother-in-law has one of those stationary pre-fab "Villas" at a coastal campground just south of Myrtle Beach. They have been lucky over the years, but I don't know about this time!

Kinda rough here with LOTS of heavy rain. I haven't seen rain like this in a LONG time. Looks like the worst is yet to come, for us. Should get quite sporty about 5-6pm. Still have power, but I don't expect that to last.

I think the dust being cleaned off is some kind of a sign.

Maybe call these generation 2 trumpets----- "The Hurricane"
Because calling them "The Dorian" would be pretty lame.---IMHO anyway
