Well,dang near killing myself in a fall back in 2003 I decided to give it another go. NOT ON PURPOSE! My wife and I were putting up a ladder stand,and like a dummy I threw caution to the wind.Fortunately I was only 5 feet or so up the ladder when it snapped in half. I don't know why yet. I landed on my back ,after bouncing off my wife and knocking her down.Part of the stand hit her in the back . Ambulance rice to Munsen Hosp.in Grayling. Praise God nothing broke.Extreme bruising of back and chest. Hurts like the dickens to breathe. Not sure exactly what caused the injury to my leg. My good leg.Its quite swollen .Follow up with the Dr. tomorrow at u of M. Folks please be careful out there. You are loved,and no deer is worth your life. God blesses me each and everyday,but without his hedge of protection I wouldn't be writing this. God bless.

Dang Red, that could have turned out bad for both of you. I'm glad it wasn't any more serious than it was, that's bad enough. I gave up tree stands years ago. I figure this way if I fall, I'm just going to fall over instead out out. I like hunting from the ground better anyway. Be careful, and wishing the both of you a speedy recovery.

Wow - so glad to hear this wasn't more serious, but definitely a close one no doubt. I'm with Ronnie, ground hunt only. I had a very brief episode of what I think was vertigo in my climber, I was tied off and didn't fall, but lost my balance and almost went off. Lost my confidence for being in a tree, never was comfortable again. So I'm on the ground 100%.

Wishing you a quick recovery, would imagine if you bruised your ribs, that will take a couple weeks to heal and not be sore.

We can NOT be too safe with tree stands!

I teach Hunter Safety and I start out the Tree Stand Safety with ,"Who Knows Someone Who Has Fell From A Tree Stand"

Then I tell them They All have Met one NOW!

Man I cringed when I saw the title. Glad you weren't hurt worse than you were. I had one myself back in 2012. I ended up with 3 fractures in my left foot along with a Lisfranc dislocation (exploded ligaments on the 2nd and 4th metatarsals). Had a plate and 5 screws inserted in Oct. 2012 (non weight bearing for 13 weeks) then the plate and 4 screws removed in Feb. 2013. I still have one screw in there and will from now on unless it ever becomes a problem. The foot will never be 100% but, like you, I was and still am super thankful that it didn't end much worse. My wife was pregnant with our 2nd child at the time and it certainly put things into perspective. I prided myself on being safety-minded then but the one time I neglected to reconnect my lineman's belt is the time it costed me. So yes, as season approaches, remember to do everything you can to be safe! You OWE it to the ones who depend on you!

Good to hear you didn't break something, tomorrow it will be real sore and more color too, I do the next day anyway.

Hope all goes well today at U of M with yer' Doc... I'll bet they recommend blood thinner tabs fer' that nasty bruise on yer' legs to ward off blood clots

Whatever you do, no matter how much it hurts, don't hold back coughing, pulling up mucus and phlegm and keeping your lungs clear. It is a recipe to contract pneumonia if you let your lungs become congested due to lack of coughing. Increase your fluid intake.

Any thoughts on how the ladder snapped?

Glad you didn't break a bone. A buddy's wife fell out of her stand a few years ago and broke her back. She's doing fine now. Heard too many tree stand horror stories the past few years. Gil

Throwing “caution to the wind” is an expression that means he wasn’t as careful as he maybe should have been. Just a saying. Not an actual wind.

Kinda makes that night hunting with a spotlight, box of beer, some good cigars and a .22 magnum rifle look pretty appealing to me....

I had 2 Amusement park "drop rides" in one of those old Baker climber stands, that will wake you up In the morning.

Had a baker mis hap too. Years ago.

I was extremely careful in my "Slim Jim" Baker and lashed it to the tree at the aluminium base of the platform w/ a rubber strap to preclude the infamous "drop ride". In the 70's while hunting in Kentucky, I had dropped a buck and in my excitement got too close to the tree while unhooking my rubber strap resulting in a "drop ride" w/ my head bouncing and sliding down the tree. I remember wiping the blood from my eyes and looking up the tree at my hand climber, bag, and rifle about 18' above me. After a "tree hug" climb to retrieve my goods, the Baker never got more than 36" above the ground and became a deer seat until I fabricated a lighter padded unit.
