Maple Syrup Wars

Post by Hoobilly »

While back Spider316 sent me some Massachusetts home made syrup..

Soiltester said Michigan’s is better

Spiders is a lighter colored syrup and Testers is the darker

I’ll tell you what..

Man they both sweet and exceptional flavored as they are home made.

On the sweetness scale they rank together. The flavor is starkly different yet both are clearly winners.

I have used Spiders maple to sweeten up my espresso when I make one here at home

I will have to place a double order next spring from both to carry me through the summer and fall

I have a daughter that live near Boston and she sent me a couple of jugs a few years back made at a place called "The Sugar Shack" wasn't very good but the stuff soiltester sent me last month and it is sooooo good. But like everything else it depends on how it is made and I think the boston area place was cutting their's with something to stretch out the syrup sales. Get 10 people to make jerky and you will wind up with 10 different tastes. I used to think the best thing to come out of Michigan was Highway #2 but now they have two things going for them.

A guy up in Michigan that I work with some makes the best maple syrup I’ve ever eaten. It’s a completely different taste and texture than anything you can get in the store.

I always liked the flavor of the darker "B" grade over the taste of the lighter fancy "A" grade.

Vermont has been consistently been the best I have had, followed by Northern Pa., then Maine.
But I have never had any from Michigan or that area to compare

I also agree the individual maker has a lot to do with the quality/flavor

Sourwood? There's some folks around here that love their tupelo honey and would give you argument. ;) . A friend has about 30 gums on his property which is surrounded by a large tupelo swamp.

I had a good friend from Pinconning, Mi. come out here for 30 yrs. to hunt Mule deer and pheasants and he said Pinconning was the cheese capital of Mich. at one time, he used to bring cheese out every year and it was good stuff. U.P. is some nice country but my Boston daughter now used to live in the Detroit area and that wasn't so nice IMO.

Pinconning was touted to be The Capitol for cheese .. but then us Trolls preferred the U.P. cheese

I did that same trip a few years back. We left Iron Mountain and drive to Duluth and then into Canada and around to the Soo! Crazy awesome! Stayed in Wawa, Ont. the day before we crossed the bridge!
Very neat and scenic drive!

As a kid I hated it. Dad was so scared of heights, he's stop at rest stop just before and pound liquid courage

Funny story, fall following 9-11 me and my college buddies went up goose hunting. Here comes what I believe a warthog military plane headed straight for it we are halfway across I'm screaming turn this bleepedy bleepyty truck around. Just practice run but with 9-11 I freaked out.
