It was a light misty rain when I left the house & had stopped when I got to my parking spot
at 05:30 A.M. with a temp of 54. As soon as I got out of my truck & put on all my gear, it
started to rain. Rather than take everything off, I went & sat on my 4-wheeler inside the
corn crib where I keep it. It rained pretty hard & it was pretty noisy as the roof is tin. It
put me in mind of an oldie goldie from ’66: You And Me And Rain On The Roof. It slacked
up enough that I was able to get to the south side of the woods without getting too wet by
06:10. It was light enough that I didn’t need to use my green LED headlight.
Again but it didn’t seem to bother the song birds. It finally stopped raining at 06:55. At
07:50, I saw a black duck drake on the swamp but couldn’t get a pic. A squirrel also showed
up. At 08:12, another bushy worked its way through stopping to preen several times. At
08:55, the duck was back in sight but still no pic.
At 09:48, I thought I heard a gobble to the far, far west. I called & got a response. It gobbled
a couple of more times. I think it was in the woods across the road again.
At 09:50, a doe wandered through to my west going south to the edge, turning east, going past
me & back into the woods headed north. The gobbler to the far west gobbled once more.
The WC had predicted t-storms starting at 11:00 but the skies were still clear, so I was sitting
there wondering what to do when things got interesting at 11:05. I spotted a redhead walking
through the green field but couldn’t tell if it was a gobbler or jake. But, based on the size &
coloring of the head/neck, I’d guess a jake. I called & it stopped, periscoping. At the same
time, a gobbler sounded off to the NW but in these woods. He responded to me twice, and
then only gobbled when he wanted, probably 6 more times. The last gobble I heard was at
11:30 & he had moved further away. As Snidely Whiplash used to say: "Curses, foiled again.”
Another squirrel also showed up.
I finally gave up & headed in. It was 84 when I left at 12:30.
Tomorrow The WC is calling for temps in the upper 60s to start, hitting the 70s by 08:00 &
the 80s by 11:00. The chance for rain runs 5-15% until 03:00 P.M. when it jumps to 45% by
which time I’ll be gone. Hopefully the last day will be better.
