Couple MT Toms

It's not very often that I have a chance to hunt a private ranch for turkeys, so I jumped at this chance in Southeast Montana. The rancher had let a couple guys shoot birds early in the season, but no one since.

After a 7 hour drive, we arrived at 2:30 AM Monday morning. We crashed in an old bunkhouse until 8:30 AM and started hunting at 10 AM. Pastor had a tom by 11AM. We hunted for a couple more hours but couldn't convince a tom that we'd heard while calling in the first to commit.

That evening we had dinner with the rancher and his family. He'd brought a horny toad lizard home that his girls were thrilled with.

Afterwards we tried to fish in a local pond for small mouth, without any luck.

We started hunting at about sunrise on Tuesday and followed a flock around for a couple hours before I got into a right time right place position with one of the gobblers and he strutted in at 7:42 AM.

We hunted the dominant bird for a few more hours with Pastor's other tag before deciding getting home a day early would win us some brownie points. After stopping at another ranch and the family insisting that we eat supper with them, we got home at 2 AM last night.

Very beautiful gobblers to both of you!

Them toads are cool. My daughter would keep it and name it
