Just one of those days!!!

You ever have one of those days where you do everything wrong????????? I hit the snooze alarm, one or three times, cant remember. Heck, I was asleep when I did it. Either way, I was pretty doggoned late getting to the woods. I also forgot that the sun is rising sooner every day as well. I had a long walk ahead of me to get where I wanted to be, so I tried to move as fast as my old fanny could go. Felt like I was walking in quick sand. I knew there was a bird in the spot I wanted to get to, even though I had never heard nor seen him. I even decided to do something I normally dont do, I carried a jake decoy as I knew I would be on a logging road. Finally got there, well past prime gobbling time. I did hear a bird 400yds away, even knew where he was as I killed his brother a few weeks earlier. But I wanted to confirm my suspicion on this other bird. Saw his tracks the week before. I am standing on the road in front of an old loggin deck when he smashed the silence with one loud gobble. I knew he was close because my hearing is bad and I could still hear the rattle. He was just on the other side of the deck. I fought with the decoy trying to get it out of the bag, the bag was winning!!! Finally got it out, plopped it on the ground and grabbed a tree. Couldnt see the decoy, so I moved it and sat down again. Didnt like where I was, so I re-positioned again. I figured with all this moving, the game was up. Finally get seated, laid out a few calls and gave my best at him. Zip, nada, nuthin, buptkus!!!!! I decided to wait him out, laid my gun in my lap and grabbed my phone to read a few daily devotionals I get on the email. I was so intent on that stupid phone I never saw him or the hen come in, until I hear the gobbler start with that aggressive purr they do when they get ready to open that can of whip @$$. Phone in hand, my attention was quickly drawn to the decoy. I slowly start to raise the gun, hen saw me and lit out. His head telescoped up and he started to give me that over the shoulder glance saying whew, you almost got me. Except, I was just a little faster on the draw!!!!!!

Sometimes it comes together in spite of ourselves. Good job ! Nice bird!

Rather be lucky than good most of the time. Been blessed this year for sure. Texas was real good to me and GA is just about done.
