Opening day in OK

Post by okiefowler »

What an opening day! Roosted a group of birds yesterday evening, same immediate area they rooseted in last year. Dad and I split up to get on either side of them as they tend to be inconsistent on which side of the creek they pitch to. Got in early and looped around the roost and set up what I thought was ~70-80 yards away.

Kept hearing twigs get snagged, and things hitting the ground like acorns. Thought," Hell dad, you're right on top of me, what was the point of splitting up?" Had 45 minutes till gobble light..... and I fell asleep at the tree. [emoji2356]

Woke up to an owl hooting in the distance and I was staring right at a hen! Not 25 yards from the base of the roost tree. That wasn't dad, it was turkey droppings falling![emoji23]
Had 6 hens and 2 gobblers within 40 yards. Hens pitched almost to the base of the tree and a bit aways from me. Gobblers soon followed and I slowly raised thegun to my shoulder. Then waited for the boss tom to clear into the shooting lane. He cleared, I clucked to raise his head, and the gun went boom. Toasted him! Twas a poke for the 20. Around 47 yards.

The birds weren't terribly spooked, the other gobbler continued to gobble and try to get back with his hens. Dad was about 100 yards away trying to hustle and set up in a clearing he's seen birds come together in before. Dad called at him, subordinate tom gobbled, and sprinted to him. Dad got busted and couldn't get a shot on him. Would have been our first double in 10 years.

10" beard, 1 1/4" spurs. 3 yo or 2 yo? I'm thinking 2 yo bird.ImageImageImage

Congrats, nice turkey. The beard alone tells you he's not 2.

I’d say 4 or older.

That's not entirely true. I have killed quite a few 2 year old birds with beards 11+ in. All had 11/16-1in spurs.

Congrats on a successful hunt buddy. Hopefully your pops can pop one in the am.

Thanks guys. It was a very fortunate hunt and the first bird I've ever killed straight off of the roost like that.
Regardless of what age he is, its another one for the memory bank.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him put on the water ski's.

Rolled another one today. 72 steps with apex #9 out of the 20. I had to step it off three times to make sure I wasnt going nuts!

Note: I did not intend nor do I ever intend to shoot at a bird 70 yards away. I estimated 50 yards which I know my gun/choke combo can perform consistantly.Image

It'd honestly be best just to lie and say it was 50.
