What's up with yankee birds and bird feeders? I'd never heard of such until I went to Maine last year. Turkeys in the south know better than to do that

Bird feeders save alot of our birds in the winter. Alot of times there's little food accessible, thus use artificial means and become conditioned, think Pavlov's Dog. Once weather breaks green up and bugs they move off for the most part.

This was the first flock of the year to be in my yard. There was a foot of snow in that yard a week ago. Up here there are no bugs to eat, everything is froze and there are zero greens anywhere. I guess the sunflower seeds offer easy picking for a quick meal. I don’t know where you’re from, but up here the picking is pretty slim from November through the beginning of March. This year was nasty as far as the snow and cold goes. And..They are safe eating in my yard. Guess maybe that’s why they keep coming back.
Don’t know if this answered your question, but it’s the best I can offer.

feller used to work for us had cracked corn for his turkeys. they would gravitate to the bird feeder when the corn was gone.. turkeys will eat about anything of nutritional value

Thanks for the explanations, and that makes sense. I'm from south Alabama. Snow and extreme cold is no concern to our birds. Eating under bird feeders in rednecks backyard on the other hand is of extreme concern to our birds. I guess turkeys learn and adapt how they have to in order to survive.

Bird feeders serve more that 1 purpose

That's the 1st place my nestin' hens come to, when they move in for the spring sit & hatch and also bring their broods in before they head to parts unknown

MMMM that bush in the back of the yard will have leaves on it in another month .. good hide
ever wonder where the white goes when the snow melts??
