Pedro the Llama
Pedro the Llama
This doesn't really fit any forum heading, so I'll just put it here:
I've rented pack llamas once in the past for a backcountry elk hunt, but never owned them. They can't pack near what a horse or mule can, but are a lot easier to take care of.
I've probably lost my mind, but back in September I finally bought a couple llamas to train to pack. Neither are trained pack llamas or from pack stock that I'm aware of, but hoping I can at least train the cria. Momma llama, Tina, was 2ish yrs old and her cria, Pedro, was 6ish months when I got them. I'll probably be beating my head against the shed by next summer but the opportunity stared me in the face for too many days.
Their names are the work of my wife and teenagers and a dumb movie.
The pair back in September:
Hunting seasons are mostly out of the way now, so I finally started working with Pedro today. He didn't want to be caught, but started getting used to the idea and I was able to harness him and lead him around. We had a couple rodeo events, but nothing crazy. We have a long way to go, but I was pleased with how it went. Momma will be much tougher, but I'm going to try.

Re: Pedro the Llama
So is Pedro going be a trampoline artist? Saw one in his pen. Goats would probably be up on that thing, but Llamas?

Re: Pedro the Llama
Llama's probably not, but I was just leading him around there. Their area is behind the camera.Swampstalk wrote: ↑January 27th, 2019, 10:44 am So is Pedro going be a trampoline artist? Saw one in his pen. Goats would probably be up on that thing, but Llamas?
Neighbors had goats for a while, they stayed on top of their little sheds on most days. I did consider a string of Alpine pack goats, but not sure it's safe to leave them alone in the backcountry. For that matter, a lion, wolf, or bear would have no problem with a llama.

You better have a horse those things won't cross a creek unless pulled across with a horse or 4 wheel drive truck.

Re: Pedro the Llama
I finally got brave enough to work with Tina yesterday.
I actually needed to remove a halter from her that had been on for too long. The rodeo and a glancing kick to my shin would have made a good video, but she settled down once I had hold of her. She could probably put a knee out of commission.

Re: Pedro the Llama
I saw my first llama pack train over 25 years ago while trout fishing the South Mills river in NC. I was a handful of river crossings up stream when they came by me from down stream loaded with gear. There were at least 4 in the train. Gil

Re: Pedro the Llama
I like their names and also enjoyed the movie. They could have just as likely been called Uncle Rico and LaFawnduh, so count yourself lucky.
I hope they take to packing gear & learn to enjoy their work. People used to train mules to pack gear & jump fences for coon hunting around here. So, I expect llamas might be easier to teach and work with. Good luck!

Yesterday evening:
It's tough to get much time in with these short winter days, but longer days are coming. You can see the look Momma is giving me as I close her into the small space....." Not this $@#& again!"
