How Many Members Here Has Taken A Nice Jake Or Jenny On The Wing?

Post by quavers16 »

This usually happens for me when, I am Pheasant Hunting and the Fall Turkey Season is open. If you are a good Wingshot with the Pheasants-- a Plump Jake or Jenny usually comes down easy.

I killed a gobbler on the wing. Had been shot a half hour before and flew about 200 yards into a tall grass patch. Flushed when we about stepped on it. It actually brushed me when it skyrocketed upwards

I halfway collected my faculties and swung around shooting it.
Made for a ugly picture. Chewed the fan and body pretty bad with the 3.5 Winchester #6’s

My second gobbler was shot on the wing. I had been chasing him all day and heard him coming toward roost when I saw a coyote scramble toward him - and he took wing and I swung and shot! Only mount I have on the wing and he was quite the tom!!

I’ve killed one hen on the wing in the fall. Flushed her and shot her.

Right now, it is still warm in New York. I was out Pheasant hunting on October 2nd and Honey Bees are still active. Fall Turkey got knocked back 3 weeks from Oct 1st in my area of New York. Looking forward to October 20th! I am going to take ABBEY out a few times for Fall Turkey Hunting and my callers the rest of the short 2 week Season. New Jersey starts on Oct 27th for 1 week and, I cant wait for that State as well! I think my best shot on a flying Fall Turkey was many years ago as, I set up next to a very recently harvested corn field. Waste corn was everywhere! Flock came into the Field and, I got busted as they were almost in Gun range. Putt-Putt! and they started that fast walk away. I ran on out and got them flying in every direction. A Large Hen flew directly in front of me and, I gave her a good lead. Down she came-- Easy Pickings as Dwain Blain would say about Flying Fall Turkeys. Her crop was about to bust with corn when dressed later.
