Zero Turn?

Post by guesswho »

Got a non turkey hunting question. I'm in the market for a zero turn mower. Like everything else there seems to be a thousand choices. Would like to stay under $5K. For those of you with experience what would you be looking for? What brands, features etc? Biggest lot would be approximately 1 1/2 acres. I'm kind of liking the looks of the Husqvarna's, but have no experience with these type of mowers. I see the thread about LGBT's playing soccer is up to 2 pages so figured it would be worth asking here.

Have a walker and a husked...both are good...huskee is a little better on pocket...zero turns make quick work of it.

I bought a 61" Ferris several years ago & love it. I was looking at a 54" but the 61" was only $300 more. I mow 2 1/2 acres & it only takes about 1 1/2 hrs.

I think it was close to $6k but well worth the money. It is very sturdy & well built with a welded deck as opposed to many that are pressed. I haven't had
a second of problems with it.

This is the write-up from 2012:

I have done a lot of research over the past few weeks looking for a new mower. The 1 I settled on was the Ferris IS500. It is the most sturdy & well built mower I have ever been on. The best feature, from my perspective, is the 4 wheel independent suspension. It provides a very smooth ride (which will save me about $125 per year in lawn rolling) & allows the deck to move so that the cut is even. It has a 61” deck & a 27 HP B&S engine.

I think I got a pretty good deal which included an extra set of blades ($90) & a trailer hitch ($50). I also get a bunch of points on my BPS card which means I get more hunting toys for free.

Around here, most of the bigger lawn services use Toro. Can’t help. I just bought a John Deere tractor. The zero turn would be be great for 85% of my lawn. Would of added to the push mowing. Don’t need that. Let us know how this shakes out.
Good luck.

Liking the looks of that Ferris Jorge! I'll have to check them out.

Mike, I killed my tractor last year. have been looking for another but have about decided to go the zero turn route. My tractor was nice for bushhoging my roads, but a little cumbersome mowing my yard. I have more yard cutting than bushhoging to do. I figure I can talk my buddy into cutting the roads for me in trade for a turkey hunt. But I do like my time on a tractor.

When I 1st bought my place, I got a Cub Cadet, 48" regular mower & it took close to 8 hrs to mow the 2 1/2 acres.

I then went to a CC 48" steering wheel zero turn & cut the time to about 4 hrs. This 1 cut it to about 1 1/2 hrs.

Find a dealer & try it, I think you'll like it. A 54" may be more to your liking since you have 1 1/2 acres.

BTW, When I read the title, Ronnie, I thought you might have been just spinning around on 1 foot really fast. ROTFLMAO!!!!

I have no dog in the race as far as zero turns but I have a husqvarna lawn tractor. It’s been a good one. I bought it in 2007. Changed oil once. That’s it. I mow. Lol. Husqvarna in my opinion is a good choice.

I just picked up an Ariens good mower. Gravely makes them. Get a deck with three cutting blades. With your budget you can have whatever mower you want. Go with someone local the can honor any warranty issues should they arise.

Never mowed with a Ferris. Have heard good things about them. But we have owned a commercial series Cub for 20 years. Just rebuilt one of the hydro gear boxes. Also just bought a Bad Boy. Man that is one nice smooth mower that does t beat you to death.

I don't have one, but would love too. I can't speak to anything other than a buddy of mine has a Hustler and likes it, another buddy has a Toro and it has served him well. My father had a 48" Simplicity and mowed about 5 acres with it. It was the commercial style and he didn't have a bit of problem out of it. I'm not sure what he paid for it??? The only thing I keep hearing is get a welded deck and not a pressed deck.....as previously stated above.

Good Luck,

Which motor is on your Bad Boy? I hope it isn't the Kohler engine... either one. Lots of quality issues with Kohler engines from my experiences.

IMO, it is worth the hassle to find one with the Kawasaki 726cc FR730V engine. Superior engine.

Kohlers can be an issue as has been called out...I had one on a Cub Cadet that was a turd (the Kohler).
I have a Scag Tiger Cub-a bit over the $5k but cut my 3 acre mowing time in half and is dependable.

I have a Gravely ZT48HD with a Kawasaki engine and 48" deck. It is my second Gravely. I put over 1200 hours on the first before selling it. It was the old model of what is now the ProTurn series.

The current ZT48HD is not as heavily built as the ProTurn series, but it's a good bit cheaper. I think I paid $5k even for mine and I have had it 4 years with zero issues or complaints.
