I was beginning to think we would go home empty handed again. No gobbling. No sighting . Nothing. I was looking at a text my SIL sent me of a dandy Tom in his yard. When I looked up I see 4 or 5 birds maybe 80 -90 yds .away heading the opposite direction. I tapped my wife on the leg and told her I see at least one red head.I called and they headed our way.I turned a bit to make sure she had the gun up and she's looking at 3 hens in the decoys at 20 yds. How the heck did they sneak in? I yelped and the hens started to leave and the boys came running in. I told her the last one had a beard "BOOM" she was already on it. Jake with an almost full fan,5 inch beard,1/2 inch spurs. I am so blessed to have a wife to share my passions with.

Unless I have my biology wrong there’s no such thing as a Jake with a full fan. He might be a late hatch but he’s no jake. Congrats now gonmake your apology to the lady of the house.

Same thing I was thinking and a 5 inch beard in one year sounds like a two year old to me.
Congrats anyway, fun to see other do the shooting some times.

I've always figured the spurs tell the real story on age.A jake would be a year old.Or last years hatch. However,I will tell the missus she shot a gobble according to you guys. Oh yeah, the beard is 6 inches exactly.I didn't measure the spurs. Will take more photos and measurements and let you guys decide.

That's a late born gobbler and a trophy any way you look at it. Congratulations to you both!

Spurs do not age turkeys. Spur length comes from multiple factors like genetics and nutrition. Was the fan truly 100% even? The wing patches are not. If it was completely even, then I agree it was an early born Tom.
