Day 2 – 04/24
It was 51 at 05:30 when I got to my parking spot of my 2ndry woods with no wind. I knew it was supposed to “sprinkle” off & on all day and, of course, it started to mist when I got there. I was able to get set-up before it came down harder. By 06:15, the wind had picked up & it was raining a little harder. It rained sporadically all morning bit at 09:35, it started a little harder & the wind got stronger causing me to close all the blind windows except a small which allowed me to get a shot if a bird came in to the dekes. I had been calling every 15-20 minutes all morning with no response. The rain slow to a mist by 10:30, & this old, fat guy with a fake knee hot-footed it to the truck with no birds seen or heard. Back to the primary tomorrow.
Day 3 – 04/25
It was 50 at 05:45 this morning, dead calm, & extremely foggy, with very limited vision, probably not much more than 10-15 yards in my primary woods. I stated calling at about 06:30 with tree yelps & a couple of flydown cackles. I yelped cutt, purred, & cackled every 15-20 minutes with no response of any kind. The fog finally burned off a little after 10:00. I watched 2 sets of squirrels playing “tag” for the next hour or so with a couple more showing up as well. Hopefully there will be a good hatch for this fall. At 11:02, I decided to walk out to the edge & see if there were any birds in the field. Of course, 2 hens spotted me when I was about 20 yards from the edge & headed west & then into the woods. If I had just waited, who knows what might have happened. It had been growing overcast all morning with the wind picking up, so I headed to the truck at 11:20 & got to the truck just as it started raining. The temp had dropped to 47.
Day 4 – 04/26
It was 37 at 05:45 this morning with a clear, moonless sky. Thankfully, there was no wind at all. Usually I don’t hunt the same woods 2 days in a row but decided to try my primary woods again. I started calling at 06:30 with no response. At 08:45, a breeze kicked up * if got pretty chilly. Luckily, it didn’t last long but did kick up off & on all morning. At 09:55, an owl started hooting behind me with an occasional response from an owl quite a ways off, I could barely hear it. It hooted for about 10 minutes. I was hoping he’d get a gobbler fired up but nada. I called every 20-30 minutes until 11:45 with no response from gobblers or hens. It had climbed up to 57 when I left & was a beautiful day with the exception of no birds seen or heard. I’ll hit my 2ndry woods tomorrow.
