What happened with this bird?

Post by okiefowler »

Went out Sunday morning here is NE Ok to a private tract that I frequent often early in the season. Heard no gobbles off the roost and went to the back fenceline where a short cut meadow sets on the edge of a past roost area.

Struck a gobbler with my box call that was on the next meadow over and butted up to a food plot of mine. Swung around and glassed the hillside and found the Tom with 4 Jake's and 6 hens. Watched him chase the Jakes around and strut then hit him with some fighting purrs and short jake gobbles, he cut me off twice but didn't budge. The hens started working my way and the Jakes left in the other direction. Got set up on the gas lease road to cut him off figuring he's follow his hens.

At 0900 the hens passed me but the gobbler wasn't in tow. Let them ease out and I backed off. Worked my way back to where I had started and struck the bird again. Sounded like be was headed back to where he heard me earlier in the morning. Moved up to the meadow I had started on and struck him one more time to get a location on him. He cut me off and was close, but in the timber near where they usually roost. I set up near a big oak and gave him soft purrs and yelps in which he cut me off twice more. Watched him strut and skirt me at 70 yards in the timber headed into a bottom that's nice and open.
Last I heard him gobble he was 100 yards away and never gobbled again.

What happend? I know I didn't get busted, he never acted alarmed or putted. Maybe a lone hen was with him? Opinions?

Hens all around. He’s smart enough today for hens to come to him. Could happen exactly like that 3 days in a row and in the 4th he may come running

This. Exactly. I had one a couple of years ago give me the cold shoulder all morning . INever did see him but he would gobble every once in a while but never showed any real interest. 5 days later I set up on him and two calls later he walked right in. They’re hard headed at times.

Nobody, I repeat, NOBODY can tell you what happened with that bird.
Just a turkey being a turkey. Some days they act like we think they should and some days they act like they think they should.

Odd that he cut me off and didn't come in to the call. Every bird that has ever cut me off I've killed, missed, or at least had within range. Dad got on him this morning and he did the same thing to him.

I'm making this bird my tag for the season, going to kill him and not bother another bird till I do. (I live in a one bird county and have no other spots to hunt outside of my county.)

Well.....dad slipped in and shot my bird.
Called him off the hens at about noon and busted him. Dad's hooked on those federal HW15 loads. 35 yards through brush and he said it didn't even flop.

Looks like I need to find another bird.Image

Exactly what I thought as I read your post.

I got on a gobbler this week that gobbled good, answered me, and moved about 300 yards towards me. My problem was that there was a hen about 100 yards from me and she was calling to him too.

For a solid hour, we all 3 sat there in a triangle and nobody would budge. Talk about paranoid turkeys! He would gobble, she would answer, and I would answer, but nobody moved. I don't think I've ever seen a gobbler and hen hang up.on each other the way those 2 did. He wanted the hen to come to him, and she had not read the book that says the hens always go to the gobbler.

They finally did move towards each other, I heard them flopping around, and then they both left me. A turkey does whatever he wants to do.
