smoke-phase tom
smoke-phase tom

This tom was hanging around last Spring not far from where I hunt. I think it is a so called smoke-phase eastern. If so, they claim this is a genetic abbe ration that occurs in one of every 100 birds...almost always hens. So, I guess this tom is a pretty rare bird. I don't know if I could bring myself to bloody those pretty feathers or not. What say, guys...would you shoot him??

IN A HEARTBEAT!!!!!............That's a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Re: smoke-phase tom
There have been 2 killed in Ga so far this year and the general consensus on them is that they were Royal Palm domesticated. Guess they got with wild birds and joined in with them

Re: smoke-phase tom
I think that may be a domesticated bird that got loose & probably should be taken out of the breeding scenario.
IMHO, there is just too much white for it to be a smoky. A smokey is more of a light tan rather than white.
You may want to take/send the pic to the DNR for an opinion.

Re: smoke-phase tom
Looks more like a Royal Palm than a "smoke gray " color aberration, but most domestic turkeys don't survive long in the wild. There is no indication that any of the three color aberrations are sex-linked.

Re: smoke-phase tom
We had a domesticated hen running around for 2 years. By the time we got the OK from the DNR to take her out, she had disappeared.

A Royal Palm in someone's yard? I'll pass. Now a smoke phase wild gobbler? Bang!

Thx for the link. The tail on the above bird has much more white than the 1 in your link.

Re: smoke-phase tom
This was a "flock" that showed up at Gobbler's Roost last fall. Turns out that they were from across the road.
The 2 jakes look wild & I'm wonder if they didn't join up out of loneliness. That gobbler doesn't realize how
lucky he was.

The brown and white ones are Bourbon Reds, also called Royal Red Bourbons, a domestic turkey that left someones barnyard. I used to raise them, very friendly and never get mean, a great bird for little kids to be around.
I was not his father but he was my son,,MAK IV, 10-15-1993 - 4-22-2007

I would shoot him in a heartbeat and get him done. He would make an awesome mount.
Re: smoke-phase tom
Looks like it’s hanging around in somebody’s yard but it prolly still eat like the rest of them. You can prolly walk up to it and catch it

Had a smoke phase hen that hung around our place in NE Ok for a few years. Nick named her salt & pepper. Cool birds no doubt would defiantly whack a longbeard that color with no hesitstion.

BANG FLOP!
Re: smoke-phase tom
we have those genetics around here, have seen quite a few hens [ from the road ] over the years, never a gobbler. if its a true wild bird, I wouldn't think twice, gobbler or hen [ in the fall ].....
you never know, unless you go
