Ky youth hunt opening morning

Post by OLE RASPY »

Woke up at 4:30am and it was 32 degrees and sleeting and suppose to snow up to an inch and pretty windy. Didn’t figure he would want to go but I woke him up anyway. He’s 13 years old and never been turkey but he was excited last night about. He told me yea I wanna go I said alright get ready leaving in 15 minutes.
We arrive at 5:15am and walk the 1/2 mile trek to the blind. I set up a blind earlier in the week for him. Got bout halfway there and he said you hear that I said no what was it he said I heard a gobble. Well I didn’t hear it but his ears are younger than mine so. Crawled in blind and waited for daylight. Didn’t put any decoys out cause it was real bad windy. We had birds gobbling all around us some close and some not so close but not far. I usually don’t call while they on the limb but something told me to this morning. I grab my K&H moonshiner pot and let out some soft yelps and clucks. They loved it. Got a hen fired up so I put it down. Hen flew out of tree and over our heads and landed bout 100 yards from us. Little did I know but there was 2 gobblers already flew down in the field behind us. I never heard them fly down. She went to them. 2 more hens flew down and was 10 yards from the blind. One was a bearded hen. I hit the moonshiner again and 2 birds gobbled in front of us bout 300 yards out and coming pretty fast. The gobs behind never gobbled again. But was bout 100 yards out. The 2 gobs entered the field and hung up bout 60 yards and then made a circle around us to get to the other birds behind us. I thought dang it.
15 minutes later I grabbed the moonshiner and cut real hard on it and the original 2 gobs are headed our way but never did gobble any. I got him positioned and gun out the window. Told him get ready. Well they act like for 2 or 3 minutes they was hung up on 1 strand barbwire fence only 20 yards away but 1 broke away slid under fence and came another 5 yards in the open and I told him to put it on his neck and pull the trigger. He shot bird hit the ground and I jumped up and was unzipping the door and he yelled did I get him I said YEAAAA. LOL. Man I was so excited and he was to. Hell im still excited. Been replaying it in my head all day. What a hunt. Done by 7:00am. We eatin turkey tonight. I marked his face out cause his parents may not want his face broad casted on the web. Idk but I know how some people are and I respect that. Stats of bird-24lbs15ounces 9”beard 3/4” spurs. 20guage Remington 870 youth model shooting 3” longbeard xr 6 shot. 15 yard shot.
