Has anyone tried a Turkey Decoy Umbrella

Post by boone5252 »

I'm planning a trip out west to the wide open spaces.
How successful are the fanned out gobbler decoys that you hide behind and crawl toward the birds ??

I would think they would be pretty good especially early in the season when the gobblers are henned up and not wanting another bird near his hens.
Are South Dakota and Virginia the only states you can use a rifle on turkeys ?? I don't want to get shot by some dufis.

Guy I went to Kansas with had one of the umbrella ones. It was too big and scared birds off. If you are going to do it just use a real fan.

You can shoot a rifle in Texas but I think only at Easterns.

There's plenty of outlaws that will hang a rifle out a window just food for thought.

Montana it is also legal to use a rifle during the fall season too, even if every state had NO rifle season, you , IMO, would have to be slightly on the dumb ass side of life to crawl around like that anytime of the year. Some dude out playing with his new 30-06 is liable to bounce a rifle slug off your head and drive off. Not worth it,

I think it's the other way around. Texas allows rifles for Rios only.

Hmmm this almost makes some sense especially since it comes from a guy I would assume has lived most of his life on that side !!! :dontknow:

I am suprised that a turkey umbrella doesn't work. I have used heads up decoys, fan on a stick' complete strutting tom and even as a joke this year picked up the blind I was in and walked it across a field to the flock and got in easy gun range but was bow hunting and needed a couple more yards.

I plan on taking two of the umbrellas and sew them together and wear it like a poncho along with pink boots next year. I already have the pink boots :D Trying to figure out wether to just throw it off then shoot, or try and figure out a way to ease the gun into a shooting position.

Just go with the pink boots only. I don't hunt in Alabama, Georgia or Florida so I would be fine with this ! :pukeleft:

That umbrella is huge and I don't see how it wouldn't scare off every turkey for miles.

Davis, who did you hunt with in land as? My guy had one of those hideous umbrellas too...

Excuse my ignorance, but I am not sure I understand the question.

Who did I hunt in Kansas with? I went moth my friend Rob and then he had a friend and his son come as well. It was my friend's friend.

That's what I was asking. Sorry about the confusion. Didn't know if by chance we went to the same person out there. My guide had one of those things.

Dress up as a cow. Plenty of those out there and plenty of room for a buddy or 2. Not to mention getting shot at.......

GUESSWHO,
I think you need to modify the umbrellas so that you can wear a white tobogan w/ a powder blue scarf across your face and a red bandanna around your neck. I've got a bunch of wing primary feathers which you could hot glue to your gun to create a faux wing. Go for it, I know that it will work

You might also want to stencil "shoot me" and "not a turtle" in English and Spanish on both sides of the clam shelled umbrella suit, especially if you seek a Goulds or Ocellated in Mexico and Central America.
